| Do you think it's too late?? So, I was wondering this the other day and couldn't think of how to do it. Coco is so great with her potty training. I had her puppy pad trained at a very early age. By 4 months she was over 95% trained. Of course she occasionally has accidents but she's very good with that. She also goes outside when we're outside. I want to train her to go outside mostly and on puppy pads when necessary, like while I'm at work. I don't know how to go about training her to do this. I'm just tired of buying puppy pads..lol..and would love it if she would somehow let me know when she needs to go potty so I can take her out when I'm home. Any suggestions, or should I just be happy that she goes on her pads..lol

| Maybe,, put the pads as close to the door as you can,and when you see her going towards there, take her out,,and eventually maybe she'll know when you're home, she goes OUT to go potty..and if your not home,, go on the pad.

| It is so funny how much alike Pita and Coco are! Pita is the exact way. I like that she goes on the pads cuz I'm lazy and don't want to get up every time she has to tinkle! I wouldn't even know how to go about gettin her used to telling you she has to go. Maybe just take her out at the times she usually does her business, like first thing in the morning, after she eats etc. and make a big fuss over it and maybe she'll catch on... I'm sure other people will have better suggestions for you, but if I was to do it that's how I would start.

| I know, Pita and Coco are totally alike. I like in an apartment, so I don't have a yard, that I can just let her out in, or get a doggie door. I don't know how to start. I thought maybe if I take her outside every hour or two so that she enjoys being outside and goes potty. Maybe if before we go outside, I make her sit by the door, then take her out. That way, when she wants to go, she will just sit by the door and I will know. what do you think?

| That sounds like a good plan. I know somebody's dog on here hits a bell they have hanging by the door when it wants to go out! I think the thing that will make the difference is makin a fuss when she pees outside so that way she knows the reason she's out there.

| My dad tied a bell around the door knob for his door. He trained his dogs to nose at the bell to tell him when they need to go out. Perhaps if you start taking her out first thing in the morning, and then take her to that same spot when you know she has to go, she'll smell her scent and get the hint. Good luck- let us know how it goes! |

| Loki rings a bell, and it's so cute because he will walk up to the door and nudge it with his nose. Then if no one comes he will hit it with his paw. Then if no one comes he will SWAT at it and jump up and down and make a ton of noise! Which is great, because I can hear it anywhere. He will also run to me, run to the bell and ring it, and run back like "MOM I GOTTA GO!" He's so sweet. It only took a day or so to learn. He already went to the door, but sometimes no one would see him and he'd pee on the floor. This has completely eliminated that and he hasn't had an accident since (going on 5? weeks now) I think the reason is that he can HEAR the bell and when he hears it, we hear it. Anyway I just took his paw and rang the bell before I let him out. Then after a few times I said, "Do you need to go outside?" and pointed to his bell. Then I started asking him to ring his bell before I opened the door. Now if I say "Do you need to go outside?" he will ring it to answer me!! We're in a townhouse with no fence. He goes out the front door on a leash. I use a flexi lead and he goes out to the grass. When it's warm I'll stand out there with him. The bell is hanging on a suction cup on the window next to the door. I took 2 piece of 3/4" ribbon, sewed them together and then sewed loops that I attached jingle bells to with key rings. If you don't sew, you can buy them for $15 online, I think they are called Poochie bells OR if you don't care what they look like just tie knots in the ribbon :-)

| Wow Loki sounds just adorable and sooo smart for learning that in a day. I will try that when I get home tonight. She is such a good girl and goes right on her pads and will look at me with such proud eyes. I am not complaining I just dont' want to keep buying pads for the rest of my life. It's nice to have when it's raining or something and I wouldn't discourage her from going on them, because she will have to use them while I'm at work. I just don't want to see pads laying around anymore.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Wow, good job, Loki. Trace lets us know he needs to go, but he isn't actually insistant on it. In other words....he paws at the door, if you don't immediately let him out, he waits a little while and then thinks...hmmmm, ok, I'll just potty here on the floor. Then of course I blame myself, because he was trying to tell me.......

| I have a yard but I am lazy. Wee pads are so easy. Plus, what happens if she has to potty at night? Won't you have to get up if she insists? bummer if she starts ringing the bell at 2 a.m. I am sure there is a way to do this and will be watching the responses. good luck. |

| She never really goes at night. She sleeps the whole night through. The times that she does have to go, she will go on her pad in my room. Like I said I won't be discouraging her from using the pad when necessary but would love for her to go out while I'm home. Do you think this will confuse her??

| She will probably be fine, especially since the pad will still be there if she needs it. Maybe just make the great outdoors a little more attractive than a pee pad. Give her a favorite treat that she just gets when she potties outside. |

| I have read that you can gradually move the pee pad closer and closer to the door and then take the whole pad outside. When she starts using her pad outside you can cut it into smaller and smaller pieces until there is no pad out there and she is just using the bathroom outside. And praise, praise, praise everytime she goes outside so she knows you are happy. I am starting to try to train my yorkie to ring bells when she needs to go. I just ask her "do you have to go pottie?" then I take her to the door and help her ring the bells with her paw and then take her outside so she knows that ringing the bells is associated with going potty outside.
