Loki rings a bell, and it's so cute because he will walk up to the door and nudge it with his nose. Then if no one comes he will hit it with his paw. Then if no one comes he will SWAT at it and jump up and down and make a ton of noise! Which is great, because I can hear it anywhere. He will also run to me, run to the bell and ring it, and run back like "MOM I GOTTA GO!" He's so sweet. It only took a day or so to learn. He already went to the door, but sometimes no one would see him and he'd pee on the floor. This has completely eliminated that and he hasn't had an accident since (going on 5? weeks now) I think the reason is that he can HEAR the bell and when he hears it, we hear it. Anyway I just took his paw and rang the bell before I let him out. Then after a few times I said, "Do you need to go outside?" and pointed to his bell. Then I started asking him to ring his bell before I opened the door. Now if I say "Do you need to go outside?" he will ring it to answer me!!
We're in a townhouse with no fence. He goes out the front door on a leash. I use a flexi lead and he goes out to the grass. When it's warm I'll stand out there with him. The bell is hanging on a suction cup on the window next to the door. I took 2 piece of 3/4" ribbon, sewed them together and then sewed loops that I attached jingle bells to with key rings. If you don't sew, you can buy them for $15 online, I think they are called Poochie bells OR if you don't care what they look like just tie knots in the ribbon :-) |
