| Swimming Pool Hi guys, newbie here. My Yorkie is 13 weeks old and he's very healthy and active. We enjoy our weekends in the swimming pool and would love to get him in the pool with us sometimes. How young is too young to allow them to get in the pool? Also - how about going out on a boat? Thanks |

| On a boat I'd get a life jacket !! Do you have shade around your pool? They get hot pretty quick in the sun

| No shade immediately in the pool but if I take him out I have a terrace that is well shaded. I would be taking him out often. My concern is more as to his age. Is it too soon to allow him in the pool while supervised? Or even, long hours on the boat? Thank you |

| Maybe a little young for either, but definitely for a boat since that will be a longer day. A little too busy of a day expending a lot of energy and interrupting feeding schedules. Mine just turned 16 weeks yesterday and i am introducing the pool this weekend. I am making some floating mats to see if they can get out unassisted if they accidently fall in. I agree with getting a life vest for the boat and/or a halter with retractable leash so you could get him out quickly if needed. |

| That's what I thought Lacy's Mom. My problem is pet sitter. I don't have anyone to leave him with when we go out on the boat and I am terrified of leaving him alone in a cage all day. Also, you mentioned pool safety. We paid for a trainer to come (mostly for house training) and she mentioned how she trains dogs to be able to get out of the swimming pool in case they fall... They say the cause for dogs drowning is not that they can't swim but they can't find the steps to get out and eventually get too tired and drown. She teaches them with a long leach. Makes them swim while holding the leach and guides them over and over and over to the steps so they learn to memorize where the steps are. I plan to do that with Cody. |

| I'm not sure how young is to young but here's a safety tip. Be sure to train your little one on how to get out of the pool. Make sure he knows how to get to the steps from anywhere in the pool. In the event that he falls in when know one is looking, training him on how to get out could save his life. I basically put my dog in at different places in the pool. Than I go to where the steps are and call her and let her climb out on her own. I do this from many different angles in the pool. I want to always make sure she knows where the steps are no matter where she jumps in the pool from. Last edited by yavenay; 06-29-2017 at 08:55 AM. |

| I guided my boy to the steps the first time he went swimming in the pool. He has gone all commando after the garden hose fell in became disoriented and couldn't find the front of the steps. Do you have a boat slip or are you going boating where there is no easy access to tie the boat up? First time out I'd have a plan to take him out. Around the pool, my little guy will take a leak where ever. You'll have to understand, a puppy is going to go to the bathroom .

| The pool might be okay if he is supervised at all times. For the boat, you should definitely make sure that he does not go in the water until four weeks after he has received all of his puppy vaccinations (usually around 20 weeks of age). With river or lake water, the main concern is leptospirosis. Here is a good article on swimming for dogs: Safe summer swimming with your dog |

| It depends on the part of the country you live in whether the benefits outweigh the risks. We got out Bella vaccinated against lepto and she didn't have any adverse reactions. It's worth discussing with your vet. |

| Thanks everyone for your input. I will definitely wait until he is bigger for the ocean water on the boat. The pool I will start him soon, little by little and of course always supervised. I will also be training him to find the steps to get out in case of an accident. Honestly, he is always supervised. I am always with him. I am borderline obsessed with this little guy. Thank you guys. Glad to have found this group |

| Make sure you bathe him after he is finished with pool time. Chlorine is very bad for dogs skin.

| Jackson loves the water!! It is a fantastic form of exercise too. I would start by gradually introducing him so you don't scare him/force him into something, allow him to learn to enjoy it! Use fav treats/toys etc to encourage him. Do you have a step etc? You can slowly put him on the step and give him his fav treat and then take him back out. Don't just put him in the pool. I think a lot of folks do that and then scare the dog from liking water. Some will just not like it, no matter what. But I feel the younger you start the better. Very important to teach them to get out of the pool in case of emergencies. Lifejackets are amazing, I find it gives dogs confidence as well in the water.

| We bought Max a life jacket for the pool. Just waiting for a warm day in case he's in then wants out right away. Didn't want him sitting at the edge of the pool shivering because he's wet? Not many warm days yet here in ND. But the water is heated to 90 degrees so warmer in than out. Maybe this weekend! |

| The biggest thing I would worry about it making sure he doesn't get to cold. We had a blow up pool last year that me and Joey played in and he loved it but started getting pretty cold.
