| Hi - New here and I need advise Although I'm not new to yorkies, I owned the love of my life for 13 yrs. before he died. I waited several years before I bought another one. Cricket is 7 months old and is very small. I bought her when she was 6 wks. old. I saw her parents and they were both small (about 4 lbs. each) so I assumed that she would be about the same size. I took her to the vet the day after I bought her and had her checked. She is healthy and is up to date on all her shots, worming etc. My worry is she is not small but TINY. When I had her spayed at 6 months old she weighed 1 lb. 11 ozs. I am scared to death that I will be headed for a huge heartbreak with all the talk that a tiny one has health issues. I am SO attached to her it would just kill me if anything happened to her. Do any of you have a tiny one like her and is there anything that I need to watch for? The lady I bought her from has a male and two females and only has one litter a year from each of the females. You can tell they are well loved and taken care of and as a matter of fact she has called several times checking on Cricket to see how she is doing and I have sent pictures at Halloween and Christmas to her so we keep in touch. She is very careful who she sell her puppies to so I am sure she it an honest person. I didn't pay an arm and a leg for her as she is more concerned about a good home for her pups than she is the money, as I said she screens folk pretty carefully before she will sell one. I guess what I need most is for some reassurance that my little one will be okay. Please let me hear from some successful tiny yorkie owners. By the way I just love this forum and have enjoyed coming here. I have learned so much from just lurking about and reading about each of your special little ones. Thanks for any input. | Congrats on your new yorkie!! You might want to check out the forum for this morning. There are two threads running on this topic. From what I read many, many little tiny ones are wonderful healthy dogs. Of course there are concerns because of their tiny weights and tiny bones so if they do get sick it is important you get them to the Vets quickly because at that weight they don't have a lot of reserve, but for the rest they are just as their larger brothers and sisters. Most are healthy and live full lives. The problem is BREEDING a tiny. BIG NO-NO!! But owning and loving a tiny is just wonderful. Keep checking threads. You will see many people here have tiny yorkies and they are in wonderfully good health! Oh by the way..mine are from 4.1 to a whopping 7.4 lbs...no little ones in my bunch...but I love the tiny faces on the little ones. Just love her..keep her healthy and enjoy the daylights out of her!

| Welcome to YT, Judy & Cricket!!! I, too, share your concern about your little one, but don't let it make you paranoid. Our Toto was 1 1/2 lbs. when we brought her home at 16 weeks. Our vet in AL is a Yorkie lover and the breed is her specialty so we haven't worried too much about her size. She waited until Toto was 8 months for spaying because she wanted all her permanent teeth in so the baby ones could be removed and also she would have a little more weight on her. She did great!! She is disgustingly healthy and the only problem we have really encountered was caused by us!! We allowed her to gain too much weight and when we realized she was "waddling" rather than "prancing" ... she tipped the scale at 5.9 lbs.!!! Working with our breeder & vet, we have her down to 4 lbs. 1 oz. and it has been really hard for us! "Tough love" just isn't in our character ... but that's what it took over a period of a year!! Our vet in AL doesn't want her to weigh over 3 lbs., because of her tiny bone structure [and she's looking down the road to senior years] ... while our vet here in Colorado seems to feel she is a good weight now. He's as crazy about her as we are and I think part of his advise is coming from his tender heart!! Toto has a "way" with hearts ... I'm sure you know exactly what I mean?? My advice for you would be ... have a very good vet, have little Cricket checked often and follow your vet's advice!! The smaller ones are a lot sturdier than some think [I understand that some aren't] ... even though I love reading & learning about this amazing little breed, bottom line, I don't even change Toto's food unless the vet has seen it, read the ingredients and approved it!! She is totally healthy and just perfect!! Looking forward to pictures and hearing all about your little Cricket!!

| Welcome to YT and enjoy your baby! Several of us have tiny yorkies and they seem to be as healthy as our larger ones. Maybe I got lucky, but have never had a problem with mine. I do keep my kidz on a good dry dog food, no table scrapes. Limit the treats. My kidz love a small piece of cheese or a teaspoon of plain yougart for a treat. I feed Wellness, but there are other great foods out there. You can go to Natura Pet Products and compare foods side by side. Just click on tools and you will see the comparison wizard. Again, welcome and enjoy the forum. You will learn lots of good information from this group. I only learn the difference in foods after I joined. I had my kidz on Eukanuba and thought I was doing good until I found YT.

| Thanks so much for the welcome and positive words. Cricket is such a sweet, cute, precious puppy. I have grown so attached to and I only want the best for her. I am presently feeding her Science Diet (puppy Small Bites), free choice, once a day I feed her chicken sticks (baby food) with a little strained chicken, also baby food. She would not eat Euknauba period. I don't like canned or soft food as I feel dry food is best but since she is a puppy I want her to have plenty of protein. I know you guys feed different foods as there are so many food choices out there, but I really would like your input as a really good dry food for her. She needs to gain a little weight and I want the best for her. Once, again can you give me some suggestions. I really appreciate your help. I just can't read enough about these wonderful little guys. I am so glad that I found this wonderful site. Thanks again, Judy |

| Hello and welcome to you and Cricket. She sounds like a real sweetie and it clearly shows how much you love her and want what's best. You will probably receive MANY posts on what foods everyone feels is best. My opinion is no food w/ by products and no corn. Chicken/Lamb/Rice is a healthy diet and is the top ingredients in many popular brands of kibble. Having fish meal (Salmon meal) is another great ingr. Those containing sunflower and flaxseed is another great ingr. I like Nutro Ultra personally and also use Diamond brand Chicken/Lamb/Rice formula. If you do research on the Diamond brand be careful as some formulas have been recalled due to "corn" toxins. The Diamond Chicken/Lamb/Rice formula has NOT been recalled, it has NO corn. Some suggest NOT having too much protein as Yorkies can tend to have a hard time with it. Just do a lot of reserch and you will find some great kibble out there for your Cricket.
