YorkieTalk Newbie! | Play mate Hello All, We have 2 yr old Yorkie! We are thinking about getting another dog for him to play with, my wish would be a new born German Shepard.. So he/she grows up with my Yorkie. What is most suitable play mate breed for Yorkie? I know if i do get a GS, he/she will get bigger and my boy will stay small How do Yorkie's play or like big dogs? Any suggestion, is greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Every kiddo is different as far as other dogs, so it's hard to say...but your little one should adjust to having a sibling. Just make sure you teach the shephard how to play w/ the little wee one.

| Our two yorkies who passed recently played with a GS. He was their first friend. They loved each other so much. Max was a smaller GS and very gentle with them but occasionally when he was chasing a ball, he would accidentally step on one of them. I only remember it happening twice actually. My babies weren't tiny, they were probably 10 - 12 pounds at that time. I always watched them really carefully when they played with Max. Personally if it were me, I think I would chose a smaller dog, no more than 25 - 30 pounds.

| I'm another person who would opt for a smaller playmate. If you do decide to go with a German Shepherd, make sure you find a quality breeder who breeds for good temperament. I would also invest in professional training unless you have advanced dog training skills. We adopted a large adult Airedale years ago and we were thankful that she had extensive professional training.
