Our two yorkies who passed recently played with a GS. He was their first friend. They loved each other so much. Max was a smaller GS and very gentle with them but occasionally when he was chasing a ball, he would accidentally step on one of them. I only remember it happening twice actually. My babies weren't tiny, they were probably 10 - 12 pounds at that time. I always watched them really carefully when they played with Max.
Personally if it were me, I think I would chose a smaller dog, no more than 25 - 30 pounds.
