Dating after divorce - need yorkie advice

Hello everyone, I'm recently divorced and am ready to start dating again, but one of my yorkies is having a tough time. My girl yorkie is very relaxed and chill when I have company. But, my boy yorkie barks the entire time to the point where it gets quite disturbing. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get him to relax? Thanks in advance!!

I crate two of my dogs whenever I have visitors. They don't handle it well and aren't good with strangers. When I am ready to introduce them, I bring them on leads one at a time and work with them with the new person.

Piper barks whenever my neighbors and I meet over fence. If she doesn't quiet down when I say 'no bark' I make her go inside and after 1/2 minute or so, I'll invite her back outside. If she's quiet, I praise her every few minutes. If, however, she begins barking, it's back inside. Now, mind you, this is a work-in-progress, foe sure, but since Piper really hates being ignored and/or left out, being removed from activities seem to make her think and she is improving. Perhaps removing your vocal little boy (for short periods of time) when you have guest will help him to understand he must behave in order to hang out...? Good luck to both of us with these determined little ones!

When I was engaged in the dating game following my divorce, my dogs did not do well at all....my mother used to tell me "Those dogs have more sense than you do....listen to the dogs!" After several experiences with a couple different men, I began to realize that, as USUAL, my momma was RIGHT!! So, I was really enthused when they all seemed to fall in love with the guy I ended up living with for the next 12 years....they were clearly very good at selecting my new partner.......everyone loved each other until my precious guy passed....I learned to listen to my dogs...they were a wonderful judge of character and could instinctively sense things I could not see or did not want to see!

I think our fur babies have an amazing sense of knowing. If your Yorkie barks at a potential boyfriend, and the boyfriend does not try to make friends, I'd keep the Yorkie and show the potential boyfriend the door.

Jazz does not usually bark at people, but I can tell when she does not like someone, I think she can sense bad people and trys to warm me.

I don't really have any advise either, I just was always only drawn to folks who loved dogs-if they didn't we would not have enough in common.

Piddle Place makes a really good point. My ex always said he "likes dogs" but his action was more of "I don't mind them". This really wasn't good enough as he'd passingly make comments or complained about them later on.

At one point, he "jokingly" said I shouldn't let M/Z in MY car b/c the car smell like dogs and gets dirty. My reply: And what should I do when I have to take them to the vet or something? Put them in the trunk?

Clearly I was pissed at his comment... So he just smiled awkwardly and changed the subject. (btw, he had some OCD issues... Doubt he'd admit it or even realizes it.) Happy to say, I was more than happy to let that relationship end.

I don't get strangers-type visitors often but if it's a one-off, like a repair man or something, I put Scottie in his crate and cover with a blanket. Otherwise, he's too stressed out. If it's someone I know who'd be a recurring visitor, then I'd have that person give Scottie treats so that he knows that person isn't worth stressing over.

And totally agree that if the guy is not a dog person or doesn't think it's worth his time to get to know your dogs, it wouldn't work out

It's kind of interesting with dogs and barking at people. I am a dog LOVER!! I love all kinds of dogs for all kinds of reasons. And yet, there have been a few dogs in my world who have decided they didn't like me. First time it happened it confused me so much because I wanted to play. This was my little awakening that not everyone has to like everyone no matter how nice they are. Yep. There are people who are nice people but for whatever reason ... I don't like them. Mind you I don't usually growl or bark at them (out loud anyway - smile) am polite but don't really give it much more thought. There are so very many people in the world.

So that being said, I love the suggestions about the "gentle" introductions and allowing your dogs a moment to get to know your new friend and visa versa in comfortable way.

I as well have a kind of spidey sense though when it comes to people who "love dogs" vs "tolerate dogs well." I have no problems at all with people not loving or liking dogs ... it's when they insist they do that I begin to have issues. Yep.
