I don't get strangers-type visitors often but if it's a one-off, like a repair man or something, I put Scottie in his crate and cover with a blanket. Otherwise, he's too stressed out. If it's someone I know who'd be a recurring visitor, then I'd have that person give Scottie treats so that he knows that person isn't worth stressing over.
And totally agree that if the guy is not a dog person or doesn't think it's worth his time to get to know your dogs, it wouldn't work out
