| Yorkie falling off a bed My Tiffany was 7.2 pounds and jumped on and off couches with ease and also jumped off the bed. Chanel was 6.3 pounds and never once jumped off a couch or even a footstool. She could not even jump up onto a footstool. My question is this. Is it ever safe to put Yorkies on a bed to sleep with me, and what weight should they be before it is safe, in case they fall off. Obviously a 2 or 3 pound pup could get hurt from falling off the bed, but could a 5 pound pup get hurt also? |

| A dog of any size has the potential of getting hurt falling off the bed. With Yorkies, legs and luxating patellas are a big concern with jumping. Stairs are recommended for beds and furniture to protect from unnecessary wear and tear on the knees.

| Thanks, Kristin, I do have stairs to my bed, (and a night light in the room so it is not totally dark) but they could still fall off. If a 5 pound pup can get hurt falling off my bed, I will never put them on my bed again. |

| There is always a risk. I worry about my 9 pound boys falling off the couch. The one likes to flip on his back for belly rubs and counts on the human spotting him. When my brothers visit, I have to supervise closely. I put my bed on the floor when we first brought Max home and I've kept it there. We probably should have trained for stairs, but my boys are nuts together and would probably still wrestle each other off the side of the bed, or take flying leaps to be the first to bark at the garbage truck.

YT 500 Club Member | My 5.5 lb Ruger has slept with me for several months. He's 9 months old. He so far hasn't fell out or wanted down till I get up. We go for potty once a night. I go potty first with a flashlight and he sits on the bed for me to get him. Hope he stays this way. I did have trouble sleeping at first wondering how he would do in my bed. I can tell you he slept better than me. We both have found our nich and sleeping good. There's nothing better than a yorkie to cuddle up with. 💤

| My pups slept in my bed when they were able to jump on and off the bed. I always had a puppy bed by my bed when they were babies, so they were always near me, but, all my pups were not tiny, weights ranged from 9 lbs, 2 were 13 lbs.my last girl was 17 lbs. It's been years I have to say they were appox. 5 months old when they slept full time in the bed.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Like Kristin said, there will always be some sort of a risk, but all 4 of ours still sleep on our bed with us. They are very careful at the edges of the bed though but still, they could fall...

YT 1000 Club Member | My two Yorkie guys sleep withe me. Falling off the bed is a risk, but not all that likely to happen. Our bed is against the wall on one side and that is where I sleep and the babies sleep with me. Once mine go to sleep they mostly stay where they are. Teek rarely moves in his sleep and Rowan rarely moves around much. I think letting them sleep with me is a risk I am willing to take because they are not near the edge and I have not had trouble with them at night. I sleep better with them snuggled against me and they are happier because they get to be with me. Our 3rd Yorkie sleeps with my teenage daughter and she has not had trouble either with her sleeping on the bed. I do realize that falling off the bed could cause injury to them. However, if I fell off the bed I could get injured as well, it doesn't mean I sleep on the floor because I might fall off the bed. Having one side by the wall helps for sure as they can sleep by me without a chance of falling. I might put pillows or soft blankets on the floor the first few nights in case they do fall off so you can see how it works out.

I have a platform bed that is not so high but the bottom is at an angle so I cannot fit stairs next to the bed. I got an inexpensive foam kitchen mat and placed that along the side of the bed so when he jumps down the impact is cushioned a bit.

| I had one of my old girls fall off the bed & landed straight on her bum & put her pelvis out. After that I bought one of those toddler safety barriers that slides between the mattresses & can be folded down & I bought fabric to match my bedding & made a cover for it. I have found that the end of the bed seems to be the most dangerous as when they are fluffing their bed, they stop & go forward when they hit my legs but with no legs at the foot of the bed there's nothing there to stop them & that's exactly how my poor baby went off & landed on her bum. |

| The answer is YES , a five pound yorkie can break a leg or legs when jumping or falling of a bed . A good friend of mine had her yorkie break both front legs, and it was doubtful that one of the legs was going to heal as the surgery was not successful . Long story short , know your yorkie and what he / she might do . Any yorkie may do this without prior warning and then .. It's too late! Perhaps sleeping or being on the bed with harness and leash ? Not sure of the best way to try and prevent , except having the mattress on the floor.

| So glad to know that info., I will never let mine on my bed. Gee, I always knew your own back yard could be a place of danger (coyotes, hawks, etc.) but never thought of the bed as being one.
