| New yorkie owner! Question! Hi! I'm new to this community and new to yorkie owning! I have a 9 week old yorkie named Reese. Before you jump on me for having a 9 week old let me explain. The mother stopped nursing puppies very early (around 4 weeks) she was very stressed over their sharp teeth. She was getting aggressive and had to be separated. Human care giver did a wonderful job with the 2 puppies. Since puppies were doing well eating and we healthy she let them go. I picked him up last Wednesday. He is doing fantastic. Peeing 100% on his pee pad, loves his crate, is playful, smart, energetic, and BIG. He weighed in at the yesterday at 3.8 pounds. He is short and is still built very small he is just very filled out. I'm worried he is going to be a giant dog! Vet wasn't to concerned and said he is very healthy and it's hard to predict adult weight get now. I wanted a standard size but I'm worried he will be 20 lbs! What do you think! I'm going to try to attach pictures!!! |

| Welcome to Yorkie talk!! First off.....oh MA gosh!! He is about as adorable as they come!!! Really it is hard to tell what size they will be as adults. Winnie put on weight steadily and then had like a pause for about three months....she is 6 months now and recently put on about a half a pound. It does sound like your guy may be more of a "teapot" ....I'm sure someone will be along to give some input as there are a lot of members here who have bigger yorkies. The akc standard is 5-7 but in reality way back when....yorkies were actually bigger but were "bred down" to appeal to rich people lol I did actually do a lot of reading before I got winnie and I thought this was kind of a neat history. But...I agree with your vet. Healthy is what matters most...and I'm sure no matter what size he is you will love him the same! They are definately heart stealers....big personalities. At 9 weeks the main thing you want to be aware of is hypoglycemia( low blood sugar). With him it may not be as much of a concern but still something to be aware of. Make sure he eats well and you know the signs of distress in your baby. Lack of appetite, lethargy, diarrehea and throwing up are just a few. Be vigilant with things he can and will eat....toys, legos, papers, crayons (just a few of the things I fight off daily) because they are quick and will gobble up something bad quickly. Winnie ate a mushroom in the back yard when she was younger....wasn't poisonous but caused and awful sickness for her. So basically if he is not in your sight he needs to be in a safe place (crate, his x pen...whatever u have decided to use for him). Sorry I know this is a lot of things to put out there....but things that are good to know none the less!! The last thing I will say is be prepared with a good vet...and a back up vet for emergencies if your regular vet isn't available. Those are good things to have set up in advance rather than trying to find someone when the time comes. I know for sure you will be getting lots and lots of good advice from here....I sure have!!! Again...congrats on your absolutely adorable baby boy!!! |

| Thank you!!! I did read a lot about hypoglycemia. He eats very well and I feed him 3-4 times a day and what ever isn't finished is left in the bowl for grazing. He loves his crate and is very good in it. He actually likes it! No whimpering or whining! I'm anxious to hear from more about his weight as that's my biggest concern. I'm concerned I might have not gotten a pure yorkie! |

| It's not just about the nursing thing the mothers also teach many other nessisary skills. I hope the breeder will not breed this female again if she got aggressive. Why are you so worried it will be a bigger puppy? I have a 17 pounder she is a great size I can still pick her up but she is less likely to get hurt by little kids and stuff. I love bigger yorkies they rock!

| I think Magnus was about that weight at that age... He's now a lovable teapot of 16 lbs! Please know that even though some yorkies might not have the "standard" yorkie look, it doesn't mean they're not pure yorkies. I bet you'll fall in luv (I'm sure you already have) with ur lil guy no matter how big/small he gets. Congrats on the addition to the family! |

| Welcome to YT. Your little boy is absolutely adorable and looks 100% yorkie. Weight/ size does not determine if he is 100% yorkie, My past girl weighed in at 17 Lbs. She was sleek and beautiful. My adopted boy weighs a bit over 12 Lbs. I also LOVE the bigger yorkie, they are sturdier dogs. Before joining YT I thought I had the biggest yorkie on the planet, I now see there are quite a few members that have larger yorkies. A yorkie is a yorkie no matter what their size / weight is. Personality, attitude, mischievous little clowns that will win your heart in a blink of an eye. I am sure you will adore this lil guy regardless of his size. Enjoy him.

| Thank you if he is bigger that's totally fine with me I just paid for and was told he is pure!! He is ckc registered (continental) which I now know isn't good the breeder had this ckc litter and another litter that was akc. She said the dam was about 7 lbs and the sir was about 9 lbs. she told me to expect 8-10 lbs! We'll see I guess. He is darling that's for sure! We love him!! And mom was completely removed from litter so there was no chance she would be teaching them anything I guess. |

| Congratulations he is adorable. I brought my puppy home at 8 weeks for the same reason of the mother stopped nursing the litter. It was a litter of 3 and my pup was the last one to come home. I haven't had any problems or concerns with her at all and I still keep in contact with the breeder weekly. My baby is now 11 weeks old and I was told that her expected adult weight would be under 5 pounds but this isn't my first yorkie so I know enough not to put money on it lol. Her parents were both very small but that doesn't mean anything. I wouldn't care if she ended up to be 5 or 15 pounds. The smallest adult dog I had was around 3 pounds and I would have given up almost anything to put a couple of more pounds on him. Im sure you will enjoy your new addition and love him lots no matter how big/small he gets. |

YT Addict | I think going by lbs is a misconseption in deciding anything. I mean if my yorky eats a lot hes gonna weigh more. I think the 7 lb the show dogs are makes you think those over are not a yorky. They just dont fit the show dog profile. Your baby is adorable but sure has long hair already. Im jelouse lol. |

I did forget to mention he is a large eater. I think I need to limit his feedings. | |

Don't feel bad or weird about questioning the size and what the breeder told you. It's okay to expect what you think you paid for, which is a standard sized yorkie. This is not to say you'll love him any less, it's clear you'll love him either way. But I too would be a little ticked if I was told one thing by a breeder, and got another altogether. It's natural to question this.
