| When they reach sexual maturity and the sex hormones begin to flow, they start hiking their legs. If you get a little male neutered prior to puberty, usually around 8 months old, that gives the growth plates time to stop growing and you get the pup before puberty, the majority of males will squat for the rest of their lives. You always have exceptions to the rule, but generally speaking, neuter before sexually mature and they will squat to pee! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 11-25-2014 at 05:28 PM. |

| My Tibbe squatted most of the time until the last couple of years when he began to hike his leg most of the time. He's now 7 years old and now almost always hikes, though he still squats every so often, then kicks his hind legs out when he's done!

| Peanut started hiking his leg at about 4 months. I think he learned from our spayed female schnauzer. She squats when she pees but hikes her leg and tries to mark trees when we take our walks. |

| Jackson squats typically at home, but when we're in public places like a park, etc, or places where other dogs have been, he will lift his leg. He was neutered around 7 months.

| My parents Yorkie is twelve and has never hiked his leg. My Teddy started hiking his leg at around four/five months. I think you can teach them to not hike their leg but I've never understood why people do this but that is because I've never investigated it enough to learn! |

| I own two related Yorkies. One is the dad and the other is his daughter. The daughter came to live with us when she was just 10 weeks old, due to a failed adoption. I think instinctively she knew that there was a special connection between her and her dad so she quickly became attached to him and followed him everywhere. To this day (she's now 2 yrs old) she still follows and mimics him to include lifting her leg to pee. It's actually rather cute. She has never squatted. It's as though she never had a female role model but I do own an 11 year old female who squats. Just cute to watch because she lifts her leg slightly different than the males. Her leg looks like a chicken wing when she tucks it under! It's funny to watch.

| In general, Harry 'cocks' his leg....but then sometimes he squats.... And other times, mid-pee, he changes position and kind of floats between the 2, like a little dance..... And other times, he cocks his leg up so high that he topples over sideways I shouldn't laugh, but I always do....!!!

| Sammy does both, but most often he squats. He was neutered at 5 months. He started mounting females in our obedience class, otherwise I would have waited a bit longer.
