When they reach sexual maturity and the sex hormones begin to flow, they start hiking their legs. If you get a little male neutered prior to puberty, usually around 8 months old, that gives the growth plates time to stop growing and you get the pup before puberty, the majority of males will squat for the rest of their lives. You always have exceptions to the rule, but generally speaking, neuter before sexually mature and they will squat to pee!
