| itchy spots Last couple of days, I have noticed the hair on both of Huey's sides being tangled like he's been scratching. I could not figure out what he was scratching at, nor could I catch him in the act. I combed him out, untangled the knots, then turned around five minutes later and he looks like a 70's hair tease again. So, I gave him a bath this morning and as I was blow drying him I found two red spots, one on each side underneath his arms that don't look like abscesses or even bug bites. They almost look like little abrasions, like possibly from a harness, but he's not worn a harness recently (several days) so I'm not sure what they are. I have put hydrocortisone cream on him and I have dressed him in a shirt (which he hates being dressed!) but I'm going to see if they don't clear up in the next day or two without him scratching. If they don't, I'll take him to the vet, but they don't feel hot. They're just slightly red but they certainly are itching him. He hasn't changed food, shampoo or conditioner, and he has worn the same choke-free harness exclusively for almost 2 years. One spot, I would consider a scratch or but bite, but both sides, in the same spot? Weird. Otherwise he is acting fine (other them moping now that he has to wear pajamas) Ideas?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Could be the beginning of pyoderma (staph intermedius infection common in dogs....like s.aureus for us) - if so, it will likely spread or you'll notice it locally in other areas of his body. You may want to put some antibiotic cream on the areas as it may make it go away. If it's pyoderma, it's usually treated w/ Simplicef x 30 days.

| Could it possibly be a "hot spot"? My moms dog gets these and she has to get her antibiotic cream. I just know they are red and itchy. BTW, he's adorable!

| Thanks! I am just not sure what they are. He has never had any skin conditions before. He chews on his feet a lot, but it seems to be more of a comfort thing, like thumb sucking, and isn't new. I am a terrible nuurse...both tubes of abx ointment I have found at home are years expired . I'm using hubby's hydrocortisone ointment on him right now. I will get some abx ointment tonight on my way to work.

| Marilyn, even though the Bactroban is expired, I would try it anyway (another terrible nurse). I have used expired topicals in a pinch (never oral). Sissy had an episode like that last week. She was chewing and knotting the hair on the inside of her R back leg. I clipped the hair and she stopped. I think the hair was just getting tangled with her other hair and it was annoying her.

So for allergies, I'd recommend reading this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html Btw, dogs w/ allergies VERY often have recurrent pyoderma, unfortunately. As you know, all skin issues are always 2ndary to something else -- either to allergies, or to some other disease state.

| 2 days of loratadine and topical antibiotic ointment and keeping him dressed has cleared up the spots completely. He doesn't seem itchy on his sides, but gonna keep him dressed another day to be sure, since he was still chewing on his feet a little earlier today. I have noticed his eyes have been gooier lately and I'm hoping that the antihistamine will clear that up, too. Gonna bathe him in hibiclens in the am, too, just to be sure.

| Apoquel after vet visit today, Iwill just pass on what she said-Apoquel works so well that the manufacturer has run out of it and they don't expect it before next year-that's all I know and I'm waiting for a spray med OTC that comes from UK. I know how frustrating these skin issues can be. At some times Jaya is clear, sometimes not. The tee shirt helps. |

| We have a vet appt in the morning. He isn't scratching his sides anymore and his skin looks clear all over, but his eyes have been tearing terribly. I had noticed it, but now that I'm watching, it is worse than I thought. Within an hour of his bath today, his face was wet from tears. I can't get the tear stains off his face, either. AND I caught him chewing on one of his feet again today. I checked the foot all over, between pads and toes, and it all looked fine. He's just itchy. I'll see what the vet has to say.
