| New Parent- Questions About My YorkiPoo? Hello, I am new to YT and new to having a puppy! Jasper is my first puppy and YorkiPoo. Anyways, Jasper is black and on his chest and legs and feet he has a little bit of brown. His mom is a white toy poodle and his dad is a yorkie! But since he is my first puppy, I don't really know if some of his behavior is normal. Here are the questions I have: 1. When I take him outside, he eats the grass, leaves, and he kind of buries his nose into the ground. Is this normal? 2. I am having a hard time crating him... He is especially bad at night. We have the crate in the same room with us, but he still barks and howels and growels and cries. But he takes 20-30 minute naps in it just fine. I lead him in with a toy, then I pet him for a couple of minutes, he drifts off, and I zip up the door (couldn't afford a "real" crate. It's made out of like, tent material and the door and sides are made out of mesh) and he will look up at me but go to sleep. He will start whining sometimes but I ignore him, but if he stops for a minute or two I will let him out and in ten minutes I will try again. But that's only for naps but I would do that for nighttime too. But at nighttime... It's like he knows we are going to sleep and won't be there to tend for him even though we are in the same room with him because we move the crate to our bedroom where my siblings and I sleep. He just barks and howels and growels MORE! This results in me not getting enough sleep. I am mostly the one that takes care of him (feeding him, playing with him, taking him out to pee, etc.) so he always follows me around, and I have to be with him 24/7, so I'm the one that gets only 5 hours of sleep. I'm starting to feel sick because of it... (It was part of the deal I made with my parents to let us get a puppy. Although I'm the only one keeping the promise, my sister isn't.) 3. He barks/howels/growels when someone opens or closes a door, and I usually say "No!" and pick him up and carry him to another room, but he struggles and keeps doing it!!! 4. He bites on stuff. People included. How can I stop it? I just say "No!" (not that harshly. Is that the problem?) and I either turn around for a couple of seconds or I pick him up. But he will just bite my shirt... 5. He barks at people and other dogs! Just yesterday, when we took him to the vet for his first appointement and shots (one went on his behind, the other up his nose. I forget the names) and when we were waiting for the vet, he was barking LOUDLY and groweling and howeling at everyone!! SO EMBARRASSING!! And the workers who were in the other room came in and said, "That's the dog that was barking?!?! He's so tiny!!" and laughed and petted him but that just made him more frusterated LOL. How do I make him stop this behavior?! 6. When we walk him, he always stops in the middle of the road and refuses to move... Also, we have to carry him out the door, even if we are taking him out to go pee. Does this happen to you? How did you fix it? 7. He will start barking for no reason?!?!? 8. If I have to clean up his pee/poop, I will have my brother or my sister hold him so he doesn't see me clean it up. But he will bite them or jump out of their arms to get to me. I guess I am flattered, but he followes me EVERYWHERE. I really want some time alone. Plus I don't want him to see me clean it up because he'll think, "Hey, I should always go potty on the floor since she wants me too!" Ya know? How do I make him stop being so attatched?! It's starting to get so annoying and if I put him in his crate I feel like he will think it's for punishment and he will never go in! I'm sorry for the long questions.. I REALLY need these answers though! Thank you so much for answering. I'm sure I'll have more later on, LOL. -Calli and Jasper

YT Addict | I will try to answer some of your questions with what I know.. My mom's Yorkie-poo has a hard time sleeping in her crate at night, so my mom has put her in her purse (she is so tiny her crate is so big it scares her) and then puts her on the bed til she falls asleep then moves it to the floor. Her dog is very much my mom's shadow, she goes to the bathroom she follows her, she goes to do laundry she follows her. Dog's sometimes pick their person and they will follow them no matter what. I don't think it is just the Yorkie breed, because my dad's Lab/Pointer does the same thing with him. Hope you can get answers on the other questions you have |

| The first thing you need to do is start some training. Begin with basics: come, sit, down and stay. Move on to quiet and leave it. He might be becoming possessive which is why he barks and growls at anyone who gets near you. Learning training commands will help with a lot if these problems. There are many tips on dog training on this forum. |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk and congrats on your new furbaby! Ok, I will try to answer your questions the best I can. 1. Yes, this is normal. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think grass helps digestion. Watch what he eats though, don't let him eat stuff he shouldn't be. 2. I can't help you with this one, my yorkie Henri sleeps in my bed at night. I'm sure someone will post with an answer. 3. This takes training to fix, you need to be persistent and patient. 4. He is probably teething right now. The best thing to do is sternly say no and give him a toy to chew on, his little teeth are sore so he will chew a lot to make it feel better. 5. Again, this takes: time, training, persistence, and lots of patience. It will take a while but if you keep at it he will learn. 6. Not much experience in this one, Henri has always been a good walker. On the few occasions when Henri wouldn't move I will usually just give a tug (light so it won't hurt him but hard enough so he feels it) to the leash and say "come", if that doesn't work I usually just keep walking and he will get the idea. 7. Training, training, training! 8. Yorkies are very a affectionate breed and always want to be with you. It could also be that he is still a puppy and puppies need lots of love and attention, he might let up when he is older. Puppies are hard work, it takes a lot of time and patience. If you take the time to properly train him, he will become a very well behaved dog and a great companion. Good luck!

I really appreciate your answers and they really help! He is 10 weeks old, so is it okay to start training now? Do you know where to get a clicker training kit? Our vet recommended it to us, and we are going to PetSmart this weekend so I was wondering if it's there?? Your Yorkie Henri sounds fantastic! I only hope Jasper will grow up to be the same! I will try the walking tip tommorrow... Hopefully it works out! Because I know taking your dog on a walk is very important and I need him to learn the proper way to do it and enjoy the walks. I hope he will stop following me around... A girl just gotta pee on her own sometimes without a dog whining at the door. Again, thank you so much!!!! -Calli

Yes, training is fine to start now, just take it slow. Petsmart should definitely have a clicker kit, but if you can't find the one you're looking for then you could try Amazon.com Thank you! Henri is a pretty good boy. He wasn't always though, he was quite the handful as a puppy, but with time and a LOT of patience we worked through it. Since your little guy is only 10 weeks he shouldn't go on full walks until he has all of his shots. You can still train him to walk on a leash though, do practice walks around the house, yard, and driveway (if you have one). Are you using a harness? If not you need to be, small dogs are a little more fragile then big dogs and using a collar for walks can hurt them. I would suggest getting a harness that is adjustable, one that can grow with him. You will probably need to buy another one when he is full grown, but that is a little ways away. Henri loves to come in the bathroom with me, he likes to sit by the door and "guard" it! He doesn't always come in with me but a good amount of the time he does. I know it can get pretty annoying sometimes, but your pup just really loves you, you are his world to him. Have fun with your baby! Puppies can be so much fun! And don't ever be afraid to ask questions on here, we YorkieTalkers are always willing to help.
