| Switching from puppy pads to outdoor. Well, I've been doing puppy pad training for the last 4 weeks. The only reason I started him on pads was because of the weather when I got him. My little guy is now 13 weeks old. I got him at almost 9 weeks. He has been doing pretty good with his pottying. He will go on it most of the time. Maybe 2 accidents a week on the carpet. But the majority of the time it is on his pad. I have been researching the differences between puppy pads and outdoor training. A lot of the things I read say to not use pads at all. And I would like to be able to take him to my parents house and friends house when he is older. Can I go ahead and start training him outside now? And what do you guys do when it is storming outside? I am terrified of lightning. Any tips on how to start him training outside would be great! Additional Information: I am home all day. I do have a crate for him. I know what his cues are for when he needs to potty. |

| Great job learning his cues. Move the pad closer to the door or right at the door. Start taking him outside for potty. Have a schedule of breaks in addition to watching for cues: when he first wakes up, after meals, after playtime or anything exciting, and so on. Use keywords to indicate it is potty time, and praise him profusely when he goes. If he is doing really well with that, remove the pad. I know of people who use a pad in the garage during storms. If you don't have a garage, which to the dog is distinct from the house, it may be confusing to suddenly introduce the pad inside during storms. Usually a well-trained outdoor dog will not potty indoors for anything. My boys are pad and outdoor trained. They have access to the pad 24 hours a day at home. However, they know that their pad is not at other people's houses or public places. Whatever you decide, be consistent. If you go back and forth, it will confuse your pup.

Hi , I just did this with my boy Oscar.. He is 1yr 8 months up until just about 3 weeks ago he was 100% litterbox trained. One day I decided I wanted to have him 100 % outside trained. I too am home all day so I thought i would try it.. I took up his litterbox and all the pads completely.. Started taking him out first thing in the morning,, every 30 minutes , i use the words " go potty " for pee pee & " go poopy " for well poopy. But you use whatever words would work for you. I take him out after each meal , after naps , after big drinks .. I gradually lengthened the out time from every 30 minutes to every hour.. Within a matter of days , Oscar was 100 % outside potty trained.. I was so amazed and proud at how quickly he took to it.. When we go out to do groceries (usually 2 to 3 hours) Oscar holds it the whole time we are gone.. I take him out immediately upon getting home and he does his potty.. Of course your pup is much younger than Oscar so it may take a bit more time but trust me he can do it..

Great advice, it's not easy but worth the little accidents along the way, it will be much easier seen your at home all day, Mickey is not yet 6 months and I'm pleased to say he is fully house trained. Your right it's more difficult in bad weather to start and train, but once they are trained even tho they don't like going out in the rain, mine more don't like having wet feet dried Good luck

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | An excellent resource book is "How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days". Is very helpful. They are not as easy to housebreak. Here is the schedule that they are using. It seemed to work for Galen. Good luck http://www.leecharleskelley.com/imag...sebreaking.pdf

Teri, this schedule for housebreaking is exactly the "game plan" I was hoping to find. I hope to be a new "Mom" soon and I fit into the SCHEDULE 1 profile. I'm kind of surprised on the amount of crate confinement time. It feels excessive to me, but I've also read that the crate time creates a sense of security for the pups. In your opinion, does SCHEDULE 1 look like a realistic (and loving) approach?
