| Newby Yorkie Greasy Hair Help My mother-in-law has a yorkie and she was complaining that her yorkie's hair is greasy even after she washes it. I was wondering if anyone here knows why this is and what can be done about it. The dog is about 1-year-old. I thought it might be her diet, which is Pro Plan in a black container. Thanks for any suggestions. |

| That applies to a lot of yorkies. Perhaps this might help you: There is a multitude of shampoos, both dog and human, and more coming onto the market every day. It's just a matter of personal preference. Coats will react to different types of water also.We live in the country and have well water. Well water is very hard and takes that much more soap or shampoo to make any kind of a lather. For this reason we installed a water softener. My preference is Johnson & Johnson's Baby Shampoo. In my experience I find it leaves the hair shiny like no other shampoo and doesn't weigh the hair down.Yorkies tend to have greasy hair and for this reason a once a week bath does wonders and makes them smell nice also. Once a month I use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of the residue. You can be using the greatest shampoo in the world, but once in a while you should change to prevent buildup.I alternate between three that have worked for me, Vidal Sasoon shampoo,Pert, and Head and Shoulders when I change away from the baby shampoo. http://www.puppypuddles.com/YORKIEGROOMING.html

| My little Yorkie (14 months old) is the roughest toughest little guy in the world with no skin problems and very greasy hair. I'll get criticized -- but this works best for us right now. I bath my Yorkie only once a week. I shampoo him with Joy (dishwashing detergent) because it really cuts down on the oil. Then I shampoo his head with a good puppy tearless shampoo. And I rinse him very very well. (There is no soap left in his hair when I get through rinsing.) Again - my puppy has no skin problems. He never scratches and has no problems of any kind. IF - he ever should ever seem to be having any problems from the shampoo I am using - I will quickly change to something else. And, even though I use the Joy now, I still plan to check out puppy shampoos and try and find one that might be especially good for "oily hair." I should try some of the ones that some of you have mentioned. I also keep his hair cut very short in a puppy cut. He looks so much better and neater this way. My puppy's hair is also very thin right now. I think as he grows and his coat thickens, we have less problems with the grease. There will be more hair and a thicker coat for it to disperse in. Good luck - Carol Jean |
