| Question I was reading the post about dew claws. It got me to checking Milo's. I have always known that he has back ones but I never noticed the front. I didn't even know dogs had font dew claws. Milo has the carpal pad which that where I was looking for a dew claw. I have been reading on the Internet and saw a picture of a front paw. Milo does not have front but he does have the back. Just wondering why the breeder would not take off the back ones. I know I may sound stupid but I am learning.

| Some times they grow back. Some times breeders do it and miss the tiny back nubs. Gracie has one back one. I am thinking it grew back, as the vet suggested.

| Peanut has the front, not the back. They don't seem to bother him either. I always play with them and he gets really annoyed- he doesn't like his feet touched in general.

| Gracie had one dew claw that was not properly removed. The vet took it off when she was spayed. They can cause problems later in life by getting caught on things like carpeting or outdoor objects. When Milo gets neutered they can easily remove any dew claws at the same time though it is much better to have it done about 3 days after birth. |

| Having raised yorkie for 16 years I have found that rear dewclaws are uncommon in yorkies, or at least in my lines. Years ago I had purchased a female from other breeder and her pups nearly always had rear dewclaws. I have to admit that I was so use to not checking for rear dewclaws that the first time she had pups I overlooked them so her pups had the front ones removed but not the rear. As far as I know yorkies always have the front dewclaw and yes, they can grow back if they are not removed properly.

| Interesting. Scoobers had both dew claws on the front. An accident I'm still unsure of caused for an emergency removal of one that later grew back. But none on the back legs.

| Milo just turned one in July. I had him neutered when he was 6 months old. So I guess he will keep his back ones. I hate to put him asleep to remove them. They don't bother him. Or they haven't yet.

| No, I wouldn't do an extra surgery just for dew claw removal. See how he does with them. If he doesn't have any problems then fine. If he ever does need a dental or some other minor surgery you might consider it if he has problems with them. If you have a groomer or someone else clip his nails make sure you remind them of the dew claws so they don't get missed. If left unclipped they can grow right around and into a circle or into the paw. |

| Thanks,His groomer keeps them cut for me but they do grow and almost make a circle. I had the vet to trim them one time and milo does not like his nails being clipped. We had a dashound one time and he would let me do his but not milo. Milo don't like it so I haven't tried. I am afraid I will get them to close.

one of my dogs has one dew claw.. I really didn't notice until he was over a year. The vet would not remove it because he said it was like an amputation.

| Scoobers got a sedative, local right by his nail, a slight cut around it and it was pulled right out. Scoobers was more upset his leg was strapped nail, but he was almost entirely passed out when the sedative kicked in.

| As long as you keep an eye on them, they won't be a problem. My male doesn't have his dew claws, but my female does and I just keep them clipped like the rest of her nails
