Help with potty/ crate training Hi guys! I need some help... I have a beautiful 14 wk old fur baby who I've gotten into a similar routine with every night. I put him to bed in his crate around 9, he gets up at about 12-1am -by that time he has peed in his crate but is fussing -so I take him out and he almost always immediately poos. So I am being successful at avoiding his pooing in his crate but not peeing. How do I prevent his wetting the bed? I have seen him have the odd accident whilst sleeping so I'm wondering if it is possible that he is wetting the bed before he wakes? If I keep going as is, will he eventually get it? Or do I need to try something different? Ty for your help!

| This is my advice and I'm sure others will be along to give you even more, then you will have to decide what is best for you. I for one don't believe in making them "hold it". I know theres nothing wrong with crate training, its just not for me. I have a crate inside a small area I leave the door open so they can get to the potty pad. Crate and potty pad to start, then gradually more room is added. (I have an xpen that i can make as big or small as I want). If I am gone for short amounts of time I do put them in their crates just so they remember this method as well.

NO... you need to fix the problem before he get to use to it and it becomes a habit that can not be broke. I'm guessing that your biggest problem is allowing him to eat and drink too late in the night. Instead of going into every detail I will just give you the link you you web site with crate training tips. They really do work. I've successfully trained all four of my Yorkies and several other dogs using these methods. Training Tips - Dawn's Yorkies Ohio Hope this helps!

Although he is given small treats for going into his crate and for when he goes potty on his pee pads.... Could that be why?

Or, I would put mine to bed, but always wake them up before I went to bed a few hours later for one last trip out to potty. They hated it, but it worked. Its not something that you should have to do forever, just until his bladder is big enough to hold it throught the night. Doubtful that this would create a bit problem... but its possible. Try just a cheerio as a treat... it better than nothing.

We crate trained both our females, and I am not sure about males so this may be irrelevant. The advice given to us was to stuff something in the crate. A towel, a blanket, just something to make the area they are in smaller so they have no room to turn around and circle before they pee. I think it goes along the lines of a dog won't pee where it sleeps and if the area is just big enough for him/her to sleep in they won't have the room to pee. Hopefully you work it out and make sure you clean the crate out with a good enzyme cleaner after every pee. If they smell it, they will probably go there again. Don't get too frustrated! He is just a baby still and has a lot to learn and a lot of bad habits to break, and good ones to pick up. I know crate training ours took tons and tons of time and patience. The end result is worth it. Don't ever scold your dog for accidents unless you catch him in the act. And tons of love and positive reinforcement when he does it right. My girl even pees on command. "Bitsy, go pee!" and she drops her little butt and lets it go. I think only females can do this, though. It is a great party trick.

ProudPops....Boys do go on command too!!! When I was outdoor training our Harry - every time he 'went' I said "Good wee-wee" or "Good poo-poo". Now, when we go anywhere, before we go indoors I say "Go wee-wee/poo-poo" - and he does woo hoo! Sometimes I wonder where he squeezes it all out from.... Sally + Harry x

Crate training definitely takes a ton of patience and hard work on your part. I would definitely make sure he has only only room to turn around in the crate. As the other poster suggested I would clean the whole crate with natures miracle. There is an ultra violet light you can buy at petco that you use in the dark ( like the crime guys use to detect blood ) and it will show you where there is still traces of urine. I was amazed at how much was still on my floor even though I had cleaned it. I would also make 100 percent sure that he pees before you crate him for the night and I would set my alarm and take him out again by 11 or 11:30 to give him another opportunity. Hang in there. It gets better. Although while you are living it you don't always think so.
