This is my advice and I'm sure others will be along to give you even more, then you will have to decide what is best for you.

I for one don't believe in making them "hold it". I know theres nothing wrong with crate training, its just not for me.

I have a crate inside a small area I leave the door open so they can get to the potty pad. Crate and potty pad to start, then gradually more room is added. (I have an xpen that i can make as big or small as I want). If I am gone for short amounts of time I do put them in their crates just so they remember this method as well.
