| Is there a "safe" collar? I have never used a collar on either of my boys. I would never use one for walking. They have harnesses, although they do not wear them in the house. We only put them on when we are going outside. I have read that some people like to use a collar just for their id tags, in case they get out of the house. Or maybe in case they slip out of their harness. I don't know if that is something I am going to do, but for those of you that do use them, have you tried this collar? Tazlab Safe-T-Stretch Dog Collar - Blaze Orange at BaxterBoo It would seem like this would be a pretty safe choice, just looking for opinions |

| This is a neat idea. I use break-away cat collars and have for years. Many places I take my dogs require a collar with rabies tag.

| We have a collar but we never put it on him. We have put his tag on his harness so if we are outside, he's always in his harness, and always has his tag on. Do not have his rabies tag yet but we'll probably put that on his harness also. He hasn't been bolting out the door or anything so hopefully it'll stay that way. I hate putting a collar on him. He seems so uncomfortable. For us it's rough to even find a collar to fit him let alone be comfortable as well.

| I've never had a problem with collars. Jackson wears one almost 24/7, we rotate between a nice leather collar, just basic nylon collars, etc. I will let him out on a quick potty break on a flexi on a regular leather collar but he is 16lbs. I do use a harness for walks and things of the nature because if I need to yank him for any reason or quickly pick him up, I like him wearing one.

| Another vote for breakaway cat collars! I just feel like you never know. Kaji for the most part is very obedient and predictable. As long as I control his environment, he thrives. But, and it's a huge but, he panics because he's scared easily. In that split second, I lose total control and he has a tendency to just run. The collar is just a safety precaution. I know a lot of people think "what's the point? They'll just fall off." which is simply not true. They're quite sturdy, and only fall off in an emergency. Maybe the collar you posted about follows the same design.

| I have used small regular collars on Callie sense she was a puppy and it is on all the time and she has never had a problem with it. I would worry that if I had a breakaway collar on her that if she got out it might brake away and she would not have a collar on there for no tags.

YT 1000 Club Member | I have more than one type Collar for mine, BUT... I never ever hook a leash to them, when they need restraint, it's always via a Harness ! When in the house/yard (confined area) here at home, both have some very light Nylon Collars, which have Bells on them. Different sizes Bells for each Dog, which lets me know who is where. I have rather dark paneling and carpet, and this was initiated to let me know where the "puppy's" are, so they won't get stepped on "as much" When we go out for any reason, those "light" Collars are removed, and a heavier Collar is used, with a very secure "snap". Their ID/inoculation tags are on those Collars.

| I don't use any special kind of collar for mine, but I also never leave them on unattended and never hook the leash to them, ever.

| In the house, our girls wear cat collars (which are break away) with a name tag. Outside, they wear a break away dog collar with a name tag and rabies tag. They also wear a harness (for leash walking) with a name tag. |

| We used to keep a break away collar on our dogs with their tags on it just in case they should ever get out but after my shorkie and yorkie had an accident with what should have been a breakaway collar which didn't break away we stopped using collars altogether. Their tags are on their harnesses now. Anyway they were playing together in the back yard when Zoe (the shorkie) got her teeth stuck in Zach's (The yorkie) collar and almost broke his neck. The collar would not break away and finally I had to cut it off his neck. We thought he was dead because he was just laying on the table with his tongue blue and hanging out. I picked him up and finally he took a breath. Thank God he was okay. It was then we took all the collars off our other dogs. Last edited by lexi43; 10-02-2011 at 09:17 AM. |

| Mine all wear reg. dog collars with their IDs on them and harnesses outside the house. The collars are on loosely though ie if you try to walk them using their collar they can slip the collar. Their harnesses are connected to their leashes.
