We used to keep a break away collar on our dogs with their tags on it just in case they should ever get out but after my shorkie and yorkie had an accident with what should have been a breakaway collar which didn't break away we stopped using collars altogether. Their tags are on their harnesses now. Anyway they were playing together in the back yard when Zoe (the shorkie) got her teeth stuck in Zach's (The yorkie) collar and almost broke his neck. The collar would not break away and finally I had to cut it off his neck. We thought he was dead because he was just laying on the table with his tongue blue and hanging out. I picked him up and finally he took a breath. Thank God he was okay. It was then we took all the collars off our other dogs.
