| How much white makes a parti? I've been seeing a whole lot of parti talk around lately, and I happen to have a parti-related questoin of my own. My Whitney has quite a bit of white on her neck/chest, and all the threads on the subject got me thinking, how much white can a yorkie have (how big can their "star" be) before they are considered a parti-yorkie as opposed to black/blue-and-tan/gold? I know that a small star on the chest is pretty common for most puppies, but Whitney's "star" starts right under her chin and goes almost to her stomach, stretching from armpit to armpit on her chest. It's all you see under her chin when she's facing you, and it's quite prominent! She also has quite a few white hairs mixed in with her gold on her chin. I know some of you ladies/gentlemen are very knowledgeable about the subject, so maybe someone can clue me in? Just curious! Thank you all.

| This post shouldn't be as scary as some of the others lol since I'm pretty sure it's a cut and dry answer. I'm not positive and I'm definatly no expert, but I have a parti (her body is mostly white) so I looked it up on the AKC website and a few other reliable sources. From what I gather, a Yorkie is "allowed" to have a very small spot of white on the chest area (there are actual dimensions on the AKC site I believe). So, if yours has a prominent white area, as far as I know, he's considered a parti. My aunt's Yorkie (from the same litter as mine) has a white spot similar to what you're describing. I could be wrong but that's the way I understood it. *Disclaimer (LOL) - please don't anyone yell at me if I'm wrong but please do feel free to correct me

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | How old is Whitney? Joey went through some color changes, and his head and chest were white for a while, but never any any white in his saddle. I think parti's have white in their saddle area, and I've read some who say a small patch of white on the chest of a puppy is a sign that it will have a silky coat.

| She is 9 weeks old. Young, I know, but I got her under less than ideal circumstances and would do things much differently now. Anyway, her spot has gotten bigger the older she has gotten. It started out at 4 weeks (first time I saw her) as a small little badge-like spot on her breast area. Now it has taken over her chest and gone up her neck. I love it, I think she is the most beautiful little dog ever and she is the spunkiest thing I have ever seen! She has the perfect little personality. I hadn't thought much of it before I read a few of the parti threads and it just got me thinking, her spot is most definitely bigger than AKC allows in their standard. Just curious if parti is all-inclusive to any tri-colored markings that aren't AKC accepted for standard or if it is a particular "flaw" with more distinctive markings. ETA: Certainly this thread wont go the way of the others! I'm looking for more of a black and white answer (if one exists). There are currently 2 debate threads on the subject that I know of and have read...3 strikes is no good.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yeah, I know what you mean! One thing to keep in mind is that parti's are born with white on them, while a standard yorkie is born all black.

| From the breed standard definition (reason for a disqualification): Any white markings other than a small white spot on the forechest that does not exceed 1 inch at its longest dimension. So this makes it sound like any white marking on the chest longer than an inch . . . does the parti have a description like the standard?

| A Parti has white as an adult...many pups have lots of white on feet, face, chest and by a year they are very true gold....or the white is so mingled with gold you can not tell... Is the Parti standard like the Biewer...4 white legs, tip of tail and face I think...but I am not very educated in this....I have seen so many pet buyers pay a lot of money for a white chested 12 week old and at a year they are regular blue and gold Yorkies...I had a little girl born with 4 white socks...I loved it...but by 12 weeks the white grew off and the feet were gold...I hated cutting her feet...each week less and less sock was there... |

| AKC told me that if a dog has 30% or more white, they will list it as parti colored, but that doesn't mean that the dog is actually a carrier of 2 copies of the parti gene (a copy of the gene from each parent). Even though the dog is being called "parti" it may in fact only be a loudly marked parti carrier who only has one copy of the parti gene, received from one parent, not both.

No Longer a Member | The standard Yorkie is NOT born all Black. It is born black and tan/gold. It looks like a little doberman when born. Then after about a week or so they look like fat little rottweilers.... |

No Longer a Member | I have seen AKC register puppies from photos sent in as Black and tan with white markings. Those that do not have enough white on them to be parti's but too much to be traditional are registered that way.. The legs, under carriage and chest must be white to be registered a parti-color. |

| But aren't the Parti Yorkie breeders insisting that all Yorkies are carriers of the Parti genes? |

| No, Many may be carriers of the parti gene , but the only way to know for sure is if they are bred to another Yorkie who does carry a recessive gene or is a parti and some of the resulting puppies are partis. |
