| Help - Brand New Yorkie, We Might Be Allergic :( Hi everyone, Today we fulfilled a longtime dream of my daughter and got her a yorkie. Unfortunately my son has been having sneezing attacks and my asthma seems to be bothering me a bit. I know they are suppose to be hypoallergenic dogs, but I am thinking and hoping it might just be the shampoo the breeder used before we picked him up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated because I would hate to crush everyones heart by having to get rid of it. If it isnt the shampoo, is there any drops we could add to its food or water? I have heard something like this with cats. Thanks |

| I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but I honestly think there is nothing that you can do if you and your son are allergic. I consider yorkies to be more allergy friendly vs hypoallergenic. I'm allergic to anything fluffy and cute, but it seems I'm less sensitive to my yorkie. I'm still allergic, but since it's just me, it's something I can live with since he brings me so much joy in return. I really hope it's just the shampoo. A shampoo that the groomed used made me itchy, and another I tried made me break out I hives. I'm very sensitive, but somehow, Kaji and I make it work. I hope I works out for you too.

| Hypoallergenic as in they do not have danger (look up dog dander) which irritates people with allergies (specifically pollen and mold allergies for some reason). A hypoallergenic dog will not work for someone who is allergic to a dogs When you are allergic to dogs you are in fact allergic to their saliva...talk to you pediatrician about a scratch test specifically for dog allergies etc. Also Google what I just told you to be sure you understand. Myself and my two children all have pollen and mold allergies my son is also allergic to dust mites we must have hypoallergenic dogs but are not allergic to dogs...dog dander irritates me on long term exposure. I really hope it's just something to do with the shampoo...how old is your daughter you bought a Yorkie for?We have a Yorkie, Miniature Schnauzer and a Schnorkie for that reasoning: they are hypoallergenic, or dander-less dogs, we are not allergic to dogs. Me the dictionary: Hypoallergenic means less allergenic or allergy sensitive ...as in a danger less dog...not a dog safe for people who are allergic to dogs. There are no saliva-less dogs.

| Maybe the breeder had other kinds of dogs or even cats running around and the dander got on the puppies. Just a thought.

| oh no!!!! i hope its not the doggie but in any case, if you got the dog from a reputable breeder, you can definately explain your situation and return the dog for a refund. I have sensitive skin so my skin gets itchy with dogs that shed but with hypo allergenitic dogs like yorkies, poodles & maltese i don't get itchy. (but i will get red & itchy from cashmere... silly skin!)

| Why did you get a dog if your son had allergies? All dogs have dander. I wish you luck rehoming because its most likely not the shampoo

Not to say that means people allergic to dogs can have a hypoallergenic breed and be okay.Personally as I said I will start sneezing and my eyes become very irritated being around a dog with dander or a more normal amount of dander...

| Sneezing When I get my babies groomed is when I have a lot of problems with sneezing, throat itching, and wheezing so give the baby a bath and make sure the shampoo has no fragrance in it, My gut feeling is that it's going to be alright. |

I was thinking the same thing. My allergies (which hardly ever act up) have been out of control for the past 2 weeks. Granted, I'm in Florida but it is spring everywhere. My daughter and I are both allergic to most dogs and all cats because of the dander, but we do fine with our yorkie and yorkiepoo.

| Exactly what I was thinking. It's not a good time for me right now and I know I'm NOT allergic to Sadie. Quote:

| My husband has asthma and allergies, seasonal allergies that are really bad and allergies to dogs an cats, We now have 4 Yorkies in the house and he has never had a problem. Sometimes if I spray them with stuff to make them smell good he has a minor problem. Hopefully this is the problem you are having.

| If you and your son have seasonal allergies...regular bathing of the puppy will help remove these from his fur. You also want to start training the puppy that feet and fur should be wiped with a damp cloth everytime he comes into the house from outside...again it will cut down on the allergens he brings into the house with him. I agree the shampoo the groomer used might be an issue...you can certainly try bathing him to get rid of that. I would also give your breeder a "heads-up" that you are having a reaction, but you want to try a few things first. If your daughter is not having a reaction, and is mature enough to be a regular caregiver...then you and your son might have to limit your time holding the puppy and make sure you wash your hands and maybe even change your clothes when you do. Your daughter will be able to love on the pup...and have it sleep/stay in her room more often. I am allergic to cats, but manage my cat allergy in the ways I'm recommending to you. I keep my bedroom cat free...wipe the cat on a regular basis, and clean my hands and clothes when I've prolonged contact...this way my father can enjoy the company of the cat and I can keep my sneezing down to a minimum. Good luck |

| thanks for all the replies. sounds like a good bath is in order with a different shampoo. have not heard back from the breeder yet. ' as for why we got a dog and my son may be allergic, well my mom has a dog, and my mother in law and he has no problems with them. 3 of us have asthma, but i am the only one who seems to be slightly bothered so far. he really is adorable and would really hate to have to get rid of him. he is perfect, doesnt bark, sleeps through the night and very playful. as for that time of the year, we really havent had anything bloom or bud yet here in michigan, but will be very soon |
