| Making a smooth transition Hi all! My little one comes home soon, and I have a little question...does anyone think that bringing a small stuffed animal/crate blanket to the breeder and letting her momma have it to leave her scent on it might help with the night crying? My breeder said she isn't sure it would help, but it seems to me it might? I plan to keep her in her crate at night, next to my bed. This is the result of an agreement between DH and myself and our doxie sleeps in his kennel so I feel likes it's only fair. Plus, I woud hate for her to be too far away from me at night and am not comfortable with her in our bed...it's not huge and I don't want her to get hurt! If anyone has any other ideas for the night crying feel free to offer! DH is worried about it, as he is a firefighter and only gets a full night sleep when he is not at work. On another note, I'd like to say how GRATEFUL I am for this site and all of the wonderful people on it who share their insight and help out new yorkie owners like me to make my baby's homecoming/puppyhood a success! I have spent literally hours reading old threads and stickies and I find this place and you all invaluable. I can't wait to share Whitney's pictures as she grows so you all can see the fruits of your posts. Thank you all!

Re: the stuffed toy, I don't have personal experience with this, BUT I'm planning on doing the exact same thing when we bring home our Little Dude Saturday. Great minds must think alike!! I sewed him a little blanket and mailed it to the breeder to keep with his momma and littermates. I'm hoping it will help w/ the transition. The breeder said she'll send home a blanket and a toy too that'll have the scent of his furry family. Good luck to you! | |

| When I brought home Max, I put him in an xpen next to my bed and hung my arm down into the pen so that my hand was in his bed. He was happy with that and I only needed to do it for the first week. Every pup is different. You may have one that doesn't cry at all. A toy or blankie with the mother's scent may or may not help. Whitney may be equally comforted by your scent. My boys love having one of my tshirts to snuggle (I remove all tags from the tshirts). Best wishes and looking forward to pictures.

| my breeder cut up a large blanket that was with the mom & pups and sent a decent size piece home with each puppy that was being sold. She said sometimes she has heard it helps & sometimes it doesn't seem to...depends on each individual puppy. My puppy, like Kristin's, prefers any worn shirt of mine, and the blanket she came with did nothing to calm her.

| I had receiving blankets down for my pups to sleep with just for the purpose of when they left they would have a familiar scent in their new homes. They each got one! I like the idea of it! |

| I bought a little blanked for Gulliver and before I sent it to his breeder I actually put it in the bed with us for a few days so that it smelled like our family. sent it to him and his breeder put it in with him and his mom and sibs the last few days before I picked him up and then he slept with it in his carrier when he came home to us. I don't know if it was the blanket or just that he was so well socialized, but he never cried. congrats on your new baby! |
