When I brought home Max, I put him in an xpen next to my bed and hung my arm down into the pen so that my hand was in his bed. He was happy with that and I only needed to do it for the first week.
Every pup is different. You may have one that doesn't cry at all. A toy or blankie with the mother's scent may or may not help. Whitney may be equally comforted by your scent. My boys love having one of my tshirts to snuggle (I remove all tags from the tshirts).
