| just to say hi Hi my name is lisa and I am new on yorkie talk. I have a yorkie thats 3 yrs old. His name is max. The most common name for all dogs.... I believe. He is my baby. Spoiled rotten. Anyway I do have a problem that maybe someone can help me with, if he gets outside he's a gonner. I don't know why but he runs and of course I can't catch him. I'm so scared that one day he will get out and run and I'll lose him forever. so if there is anyone out there that maybe has any suggestions , I'll gladly try them. Thanks Lisa |

| My little guy is a runner as well. He is never let outside without a harness and leash. I could not live with myself if anything ever happened to him. About six months ago he got out (he's FAST!) when I wasn't home and my husband said he was across the street about half way down the block and luckily our granddaughter was able to get him which surprised me because he won't come to anyone other than me or my husband. Fortunately I have trained him when he's out in the yard saying "Toby want a treat" and he always comes running. I had to use that on him once when he ran out in the front yard. All I said was "Toby want a treat" and he came running back to me. Of course he got an extra treat for obeying the command. I never ever let him out of the house unleashed. I'm sure there will be many others that agree with me. I almost forgot - WELCOME to YT. You're gonna love it here.

| Welcome to YT and i believe running away is their nature so it seems, there have been so many here on YT that have lost their yorkies this way never to see them again, including me but i was one of the few lucky ones after being gone all night he returned the next afternoon. I believe someone kept him over night i don't believe he could have survived the cold and he was tramatized by his adventure for weeks i couldn't leave the house with out him he was scared to death if he wasn't by my side. I hope you will get a harness & leash for him to wear outside they are so fast that they are gone before you realize it

| I think the first thing to do to try to fix this problem is to work on his recall. You can practice this in a safe, fenced in area like your backyard or a fenced park. Use treats and call him to you. Everytime he comes to you, give him a treat. He will eventually learn that it is a positive thing to come to you and this should definitely better his recall. However, I still would not trust him to come and always keep him leashed and harnessed. Both of mine have amazing recall, but I never let them off leash unless they are in a confined area where I know they are safe.

| Welcome to YT. My first yorkie was a runner. I used his favorite past-time as a retrieval method. Whenever he escaped I would go outside and yell, "let's go for a ride" and like magic......he would run up to the car! I know....kind of cheating, but whatever keeps them safe. |

| Hi Hi Lisa, I'm new here, too. YT is an amazing place, chock full of wonderful advice, information, yorkies and people! I've had dogs all of my life and only one is able to go outside without a leash and I know I can trust her completely (my golden/cocker mix). Otherwise it's a leash for all.

| We try and always remember to close the furbutts into the kitchen when the doorbell rings. Then I will go to the front door and answer it. Also, one day last year my husband had the two out back in my yard playing ball..(not fenced) and Levi got a scent and was gone. No one would tell me until my son called me and told me what happened and that he had Levi. So needless to say..as soon as the ground thaws in the spring..we will be fencing in our back yard for the pups. p.s. almost forgot..WELCOME TO YT.....

YT Addict | This is one of my biggest fears with Axel! I absoultly freak when he gets near a door...we had company for Thanksgiving, I'm sure they got tired of hearing me did you close the door! wheres the dog! watch the dog when you go out! etc. etc. cause I know he would be gone. He loves to go with us in the streetrod...he knows when we start the car he hears it he knows he is going, so one time I just opened the door and let him run to the streetrod...ya sure, he ran right past it and down the street he went...my neighbors must have thought I was a nut, screaming for Axel but I was in a panic. So he is not trusted at all. I too need to work on this recall...when he gets something of ours, I say want a treat and he drops it..Ill try this out side, but he'll be on a leash. |

| Welcome to YT. Harness, check. Leash, check. Doors closed, check. Fence locked, check. ID tags on, check. It seems like I spend my days checking on them. Bubba has only gotten loose one time. We went to a dog boutique and I let him off leash since we were the only ones shopping in the store. Well, he opened the screen door to the store and started running down the busy street with me in hot pursuit. The faster I ran the faster he ran. So, I turned around and ran in the opposite direction, calling him and he turned and followed me. Thank heavens I got a hold of him before he got into traffic. Since then the only place away from home that he isn't leashed is the enclosed dog park.

| Welcome to YT. Are there training classes in your area? That would be a good place to start.
