| New! Dexter.. =] Hello there everyone, I joined a week or so ago, and have been lurking about gathering information from these helpful forums, but now, Im here on the light! I just got my first Yorkie/own puppy, although I did deal with a couple of german shepards when I was younger, so Im not completely inept... lol So far my baby Dexter is absolutely precious and hyper and just everything a puppy should be! But there are some issues that my parents dealt with that I never had to... one of them being fleas.. my poor baby is only 8 weeks (I know, young) so I cant really find anything to use on him that wouldn't hurt him, so I was wondering if maybe some breeders or young puppy owners could help me out with alternative methods. I hurts me to know that those things are hurting/bothering him so much. Thanks everyone! And sorry if I posted in the wrong section, I couldn't really determine which topic to put it under. =| lol |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome. You should ask your vet what to use on a young puppy. Hopefully with the colder weather you should be able to get rid of them. I know some people on here will have some advice.

| Yeah I know that, but I wanted to get some advice from other people to see if maybe any puppy breeders here had their own methods or maybe to see if there is some method that I havent seen yet. I heard that Dawn dish soap works... and also some rumors that maybe tea tree oil with my regular shampoo? Either way just wanted to see what kind of advice I got. =] |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Welcome to you and Dexter! You may find that Dexter is constantly surprising you. I thought that having raised (or helped raise) a pair of miniature dachshunds, a beagle mix, an Australian shepherd, a cockapoo, and several Heinz 57s, that I knew everything I needed to know to raise my Yorkie. Not so! I'm on here constantly looking for information about them - especially the Yorkie psyche, which is totally different from any other dog I have EVER encountered. I hope you will find this site equally informative. If you search on "fleas" or "flea treatment" I think you will find lots of useful info. My Tallulah is still a little too young for me to want to give her flea treatment (when - not if) she gets fleas. A couple of people who have lots of experience have suggested using Dawn dishwashing liquid -- the regular kind, not the "enhanced" stuff. Makes sense to me, I'm a handspinner/weaver and we use regular Dawn to hand-wash wool because it cleans really well without damaging the fiber. I would just suggest that you don't want to bathe Dexter with it too often -- any bathing with soap will tend to dry the dog's skin and Yorkies tend to have sensitive skin in the first place. |

| I found several articles online that recommend Dawn dish soap, but only on rare occasion. Get a flea comb first (very closely knit teeth). Give a bath and use the comb while the fur is still damp. Keep a bowl of water close by for a "rinse" after each swipe with a comb. Wash all the bedding, blankets, etc, and use the dryer on high heat to kill the eggs. Vacuum the area REALLY well. Hope this helps and welcome to YT!

| my experience with my last dog and fleas is that they like warm places as in the groin around the genitals, the ears and at the tops of the legs in the little doggy arm pits. I used a human lice comb, the plastic one, or I would catch them in my nails and squish them to death. There has to be something topical that is safe for pups and I'm sure your vet will know, just in case they have layed eggs. |

| Hey thanks guys! So what I ended up doing was going through his hair and removing them manually, sprayed down my whole and his things, washed his things as well, and washed him too. I am more than certain they are all gone, he has stopped scratching like he was. i feel so much better now. =] |
