| Another disgusting act against dogs So I'm driving into work this morning, listening to my radio when a commercial comes on for a news story that the local news is going to be airing tonight. De-barking surgery for dogs. Not only am I mortified by this, I am disgusted by the idea that there are actually veterinarians out there that would perform this kind of surgery. I could only imagine what Victoria would be saying!

| OMG are you kidding? That is mean, cruel, selfish and just plain LAZY!!!!! If you don't have time to train your dog not to bark or don't want a dog that barks that get a cat or don't own a pet. That's the equivalent to us getting our vocal chords out! SICK

| I know! Totally inhumane! I was telling my 14 year old daughter about this story and she said the same thing. Inhumane, cruel, lazy, and it would be like them taking our voices away. I am completely disgusted by this.

| By taking away their voice, they're not taking away the desire to bark, so by making them unable they're likely to just cause problems in the future and pups everywhere will be acting out in other ways

| My Oliver is a barker... at everything... I've tried everything and he just will not stop. He's skittish and scared and this is his way of feeling like he's protecting himself, and likely me as well. I would never, ever take his voice from him. This is just sick... I would never trust a vet who would even think about doing this.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | It's a sad thing for any dog to undergo but unfortunatly - this has been done for years - the worst part is not the vets who do it - but the puppy millers - if you really want to be totally mortified - then read about them When I first learned HOW they do it (I can't even say it - too graphic) I was in tears. The Millers do NOT practice medicine - they inflict major pain in a horrendous way |

| Red98vett - I have read about the puppy millers and almost posted something about them as well with my original post but decided against it. I agree, the millers are much worse! However, I did have to watch the news story last night. They interviewed a gentleman who had some kind of terrier (I am not certain what kind but it was definitely a terrier). Any way, this guy says that his dog is 13 years old and when he first got him, he barked and barked and barked and the neighbors would complain and called the police on him. So he had his vet debark him. At the end of the segment, this guy made a comment that his 13 year old dog has sired 22 litters. Ya think your pup may have been barking because he smelled a female in heat somewhere???? A vet was also interviewed. His name was not given but he did say that debarking is not always the best solution because the procedure could actually make the dog bark louder or higher pitched. He also said that the debarking procedure (which is cutting of the vocal chords) could also affect the dog's ability to fend off illness. Some people amaze me....

| Very true! Besides being cruel, it is very irritating! We had a neighbor with a debarked poodle and it was horrible listening to it.
