| Will my puppy's temperament change as she gets older? Hey guys I just got the cutest yorkie pup a couple days ago and am in love! I have heard many stories about yorkies being very hyper, yappy dogs and am VERY pleased with how calm and quiet (most the time) my girl is. Is she going to stay like this or is there a chance her temperament will change? Just curious but I will love her either way! |

| Welcome to YT. My little girl is almost a year and she is still very calm and quiet most of the time, except when we are playing. I think that like any living being they are all different and they adapt to their environments. I think it will depend on what she sees and hears around her, if you have another dog that barks a lot, she will pick up on that, if not she will probably stay as she is. How old is she? How long have you had her? This can tell us more.. |

welcome to YT. Congrats on your sweet new baby pup. how old is she? My Madison was 6 mos when we got her. She always been quiet compared to my vocal maltese lexie. We have been involved with a yorkie play group. 7 yorkies that meet daily and we've been together for 2 years and I'd have to say they all have the same personality they had 2 years ago. In my opinion, their environment, the training they get and their routine all play into how they will be when they are adult dogs. | |

| My Yorkies are sisters and so the opposite in every single way. Missy is a quiet, calm, little snob that does not desire any affection at all. She's a total Diva. Then there's Dora. She's crazy, loud, daring, and a little spitfire that is FULL of love, cuddles and kisses. She's such a tomboy. I really love that they are so different, but they have kept the personalities that they were born with.

| When it comes to yorkies, there are no rules! Uni came to us so calm and cute. she didn't even bark until she was about 5 mo. Now she is a spaz. A well trained spaz who knows a lot of tricks, but a spaz nonetheless. Spaz with a capital S!

| Thanks so much for all the feedback! She is 14 weeks now and I have only had her 2 days.... My Dad was not to fond of me getting a pup but the fact that she is so quiet and calm has helped a lot and I'm just hoping she stays this way!! |

| Oh how sweet she sounds! My suggestion then is to have as many friends come over to your house as possible. Even with dog (who have been fully vaccinated!!!) and introduce your baby to all the different things in life. They say to introduce them to 100 different things in 100 days (I think)! Anyway, have her learn what is an umbrella, someone with a big hat, a radio, cell phone ringing, you get the idea. The more they are exposed to early, the less they will freak out and bark at everything later in life. Also, you can start obedience and trick training right away! check out the training forum and the obedience forum. This thread too! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...-progress.html Good luck!

| Great advice! I will definitely start training! Also.... She gets really upset when I leave the room even for just a second and she will bark, cry, even howl! Is that a normal puppy thing? How should I go about easing her separation anxiety? I will be going back to school in June for about 4 or 5 hours a day and am sure my Dad will HATE this. Lol |

| Yes they do! A good thing to teach now is the "wait" command. Similar to "stay". Basically the learn that they do nothing until you come back and they get a treat! Stay and wait is the same. Start with just having them do a sit and "wait" (or stay) whatever hand signal you want. and take one step back. and wait for one second. then come back and treat. Then increase to 2 steps, 3 steps, etc. Do NOT treat until you get back to them. Do this every day and increase the distance. Show dogs are supposed to do a sit and stay for 3 and 5 min! So us non show people can do it to! Just be sure to have a training session every day. Even if it is just 5 mins. I like to do training during mealtime with regular kibble. My Uni didn't know what a treat was until she was over 2 yrs old. heh heh I'm mean. JK!

| My little Linus has changed so much in the time that we've had him. When we first met him and brought him home he was silent, but incredibly hyper! After about a week of that, he slowed down and just wanted to sit in your lap all the time. Now, he's still sweet and pretty quiet, but he is much much more independent and able to play on his own. And, he has just started barking a little bit over the past couple weeks. He doesn't bark often, but he certainly lets us know when someone is at the door!! Just don't be surprised if their temperaments change, Linus changes every day!! And if possible, I love him even more each time! |

| Their temperament doesn't change. What you see is what you get and they will be the same as adults.

| Well as for my exp, Uni started out pretty chill. We'd take her to a restaurant (smuggled in my huge purse) and put her on the seat next to me with a hoodie over her and she would just sleep. Since the first day I got her she was like this. Then one day she just decided that she wouldn't have any of that. She kept trying to get on the table. good thing it was our friend's restaurant, so he didn't mind her being in there. Maybe it was the beefalicious smell of pho, I don't know, but from that day, we can NOT bring her to any dining establishment. So yes, I think temperament CAN change... Uni's for the, not worst, but for the loudest. (she didn't even bark until she was about 5 or 6 months) Like I said, with yorkies, there are no rules.
