YT Addict | When Shaving Ears... ? Question Hi, I decided to take it upon myself to shave Derby's Ears. Now I shaved ALL of the outside, and the inside upper part. I now look on You Tube and I took WAY TOO MUCH OFF!!!!!!!! Omg what did I do? I wanted to help his ears stand up because he was doing so well today, and I saw those big ol Dumbo ears of his stick up a bit while playing today at 3 months old! I got excited! I wanted to help! and now I don't think i helped.... Did I do something super bad... Poor Derby.... It's hard for us because my husband totally trimmed him completely about a month ago and he barely has any hair at all, so I didn't really have any guideline. Now what? |

YT Addict | Ok so here is some pics. Folded from playing, ears up, ears down, and up from playing while shaved. Is that ok? did I do an ok job? Like those ears are totally SHAVED. I never noticed yorkie's ears have a little slits on the sides? At first I thought I nipped his ears, but both sides have it I guess??? Was this where I was supposed to keep hair there? for a reason? Breeders??? I am such a new MOM ... Sorry! |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | Awwww, Derby is a cutie no matter what! So you completely shaved his ears.........no big deal. His hair will grow back in no time and being shaven WILL help them to stand by keeping them from being weighed down. I'm not quite sure on the shaving one side or both, but once his ears are up and the hair grows back, just the top 1/3 of the ears are kept shaved and the outside is done on the tips in a "V" shape. I also had no clue about the slits on a dogs ears; I think the mixed cocker spaniel had them also cuz I remember checking his when I first saw them on my yorkies. I'm not sure what the purpose of that is, but I DO know that it is NOT a guideline on how far down to shave the ears though.

| awww, isn't he just adorable!! You did fine, no need to worry, his hair will grow back, just like luckylady said. The weight being off will help them to stand, but don't freak out if they sort of droop when he starts teething in a month or two. Gracie Ruths ears didn't stay completely up until she was about 7 months old. Yogi's, who is 13 months old, still don't stay up if we let the hair start to grow on them. He just has way too much hair. I constantly have to keep after them with the clippers. And I do have to shave nearly the entire back of his ears or they flop. No worries, you didn't 'break' him, he'll be fine. Fortunately hair is the one thing they will recover from when we mess it up. And I've done my fair share of messing them up.

Yes, you did trim too much off, but he is young and it will grow back. Next time only trim from the tip down to about 1/4 of the ear. Both sides and the edges. But only 1/4 of the ear down from the tip. You can also make his rounded ears look more pointed by allow a tip or point to the hair when you trim it. When you groom them, before their bath shave the ear that 1/4 from the tip on each side of the ear - front and back. Bathe. Then after the bath and while wet take your fingers and run the hairs along the edge of the ear out to the side and then trim with scissors down from the point of the ear down along the edge to 1/4 of the ear, making sure not to cut the ear. When the hair is wet you can see this edge of the ear better. Do the same to both edges and then you are finshed. There are directions out there on the Internet with photos and even one is a YouTube video. There is also a video out by SweetyBlue how to groom your yorkie like the pros. Best of luck with your baby. | |

| Here are a souple puppy photos to show the ears trimmed. I hope these help. But do not worry - like I said his hair will grow out in no time and you will be ready to trim the right way. We all ahd to learn. It is okay. As the hair you leave on grows along the edge it will drape down. |
