| Has "digging" ever damaged your furniture? I know yorkies tend to like digging, and Nikko has recently discovered how much fun it is, especially on our couch. It's not too excessive, and it doesn't bother me - I know it's in his nature, and it's frankly cute to watch him paw out a spot to nap on. But if it's going to rip up the couch eventually, I can't allow it. Cats can destroy furniture with their scratching, for sure. Which is what has me worried. But has anyone ever had little yorkie claws destroy a couch? I want to let him do it, but I just don't know how much damage his little paws are actually doing? I figure digging is different from cat "clawing" but...??? Lauren & Nikko |

| My two have never destroyed any furniture but they have destroyed a blanket that we had on the bed. It was a loosely woven blanket and by the time they found a comfy spot to lay, the blanket looked like a war zone!

| Mine only seem to "nest" if there's a blanket to re-arrange. Yes, it will probably damage your furniture at some point. Right now we're having a time trying to re-direct Jack from chewing on the new oak window sill that DH put on last summer. He is the most aggressive chewer that we've had. They are smart and want to learn. So we're working with Jack while he's young to try and curb his behavior.

| I usually throw down a blanket when Samson starts scratching the couch. He will start digging on that instead.

| Mine have ruined a chair (one of a matched set) in front on the living room window. They get all excited when they see squirrels going up and down the tree in the front yard. They have torn the fabric and scratched the wood.

| Chip has dug three holes in my wall and stripped paint. He has also licked/dug a giant hole in my bathroom floor and ate a baseball size spot in the carpet (he was in his crate I swear). Don't ask. I don't even know.

| I only have one Yorkie and he can dig as much as he pleases. So far, the couch takes the most beating but is still in great shape. When he finally destroys it, it would probaby be time for us to change it anyways in a few more years. Not too bad for a couch from IKEA.

| Bailey will "nest" on my recliner and on various blankets. She's two years old and nothing has been damaged.

| If given a chance I mine could scratch the leather up . Sydney can dig like a mad woman ! I keep a thick fake fur blanket in Sydney's "spot" and she is allowed to dig at that but not the sofa itself. Chloe is to small to jump on or off the sofa herself so she only sits on it with us , so she only digs at a blanket as well. Chloe did (lightly) scratch my ottoman doing a bull type scratch (she scratches her back feet only puts her head down and runs like a bull ) but it wasn't bad enough to worry about , it adds to the character

| My male Maltese likes to "dig"---oddly, he doesn't dig in the garden, but he loves to dig in the house. His favourite place is the bed, so we, too, use a blanket that it is OK for him to dig on. Puddin, who just arrived yesterday, has already tried to burrow out of her sleeping basket!!

| Hey, thanks everybody who chimed in with your experience! As with just about every question I ever ask, there's quite the wide variety in responses! But it all goes to help me make a more informed decision... I really appreciate it. I think we'll let Nikko dig on blankets, but not the couch or couch cushions. The couch cushions will be the hardest part I think... They're big and soft and brown, with a dented-in big button right in the middle. I know if I ever decided to take up digging in my free time, those sure would look to me like the perfect pile of soft dirt, with a hole already started and a big button target to paw at.
