| Need some advice please Ok, I need some help! I am a new Yorkie owner. I have had my 4 month old baby "Loli" for 6 weeks now. I have not changed her food or treats. When my husband got home from work he noticed that she had not pooped all day. She was dragging hew bum on the floor and was straining. When he picked her up he noticed she was a little compacted around her rectum. He cleaned her up thinking that she was having difficulties having a BM do to the feces covering her bum. It was at this time that I walked in the door. Her anus looked a slight bit red. She still has not been able to poop even though she has tried. I am an RN who works in women's health but am totally clueless when it comes to puppies! Loli is not being her perky self although she is still walking around. As a nurse I worry about bowel blockage but feel that she would be laying down wimpering if that were happening. I called the after hours vet who was no help at all. What should I do? I need some advise! Please fellow yorkie lovers with more experience than me...I need your help! Thanks so much! |

| I don't know anything about this, but I hope your baby is okay! I also wanted to bump your post up so someone else might see it. You might also want to post this in the Sick and Injured forum. Keep us posted!

Yorkie Yakker | it maight be that her anal glands are filled with liquid. this had happend before to my pup. its an infection. get her to the groomers and tell them whats happening and they should squeeze it out, your vet may be able to do it to. hope it helps, keep me posted.

| Just seeing this, I hope your girl is doing better today. A little can pumpkin can help with either constipation and diaherra(sp?). Just be sure it's the pure pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling. If she's still having problems pottying today, though, I'd make an appointment with your vet to have her looked at. Blockage is nothing you want to let go too long, as I'm sure you are aware of. Let us know how she is doing, ok.

| After hours vets are usually no help on the phone. You can try pure canned pumpkin or Metamucil but if she continues to look irritated down there or doesn't have a bowel movement, she needs to see the vet.

| Do you feed her dry food or can? Kibbles (dry) is so much better for them, for their teeth and anal glands. Make sure it is a premium brand, and that should reduce future problems. Prince is 5 years old and has never had problems with his anal grands. We use Solid Gold (wee bits) and Blue Buffalo (for picky eaters). His usual treats are Mellow Mut chicken strips, but we only give this about once a week. I got the strips from his vet. Good luck, I hope your baby feels better. |

| Thank so much for your help. I am taking Loli to the vet today at 2:30. He (the vet) thinks it may be a swollen gland. I am so grateful for all the help you guys have given me. I am a new Yorkie owner and new to this site as well. What a wonderful community it is here. Everyone is so nice and helpful. Thanks again! I will keep you updated! |
