| yorkies and furniture Hi all, This is going to be a bit long, so bear with me. Before we adopted Humphrey, we had all this plans on getting new cool furniture. He came to us in the middle of everything, the flat is completely refurbished in terms of walls, flooring, lighting and tiling. However, we are still missing the new furniture and we are a bit scared about investing money on leather sofas, knowing Humps might just rip them apart. He is not a destructive dog, but he loves watching tv on the sofa and since he isnt that tall, he often needs to try jumping on the sofa a few times before he finally makes it and he obviously uses paws, nails, teeth to pull himself up. Also, we have just begun leaving him on his own for long-ish periods of time and he has been sooo wonderful (he's only 4 months btw). But I am afraid he might get bored and start scratching the sofas or trying to dig them up once he is on them. Have any of you experienced something simillar? any suggestions? thanks in advance!!! |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | The Dog Whisperer would probably say don't let him on the couch because he'll think he's your equal. However, I'm more of a Dog Pamperer. I bought some doggysteps that allow them to climb up and down whenever they want. We have leather furniture and two Yorkies, and we've never had a problem. I'm not offering a guarantee, but I know it's possible. I had a second set in the bedroom, but I ran into some dominance issues there, so they have to be invited onto the bed now. No steps. I believe you can get them at Wal-Mart for a reasonable price. I bought mine online. I think this is the place where I got them. At least it shows what I'm talking about. Doggy Steps from Telebrands Corp. Official Page Another thing that might help is getting him some safe chew toys to occupy his time. Bully sticks. Kongs. Whatever he likes and is safe. If you were real paranoid, you could restrict his freedom while you're away. Baby-gate him in the kitchen or bathroom or even consider kenneling.

| Squirt chewed a sofa cushion when he was a pup of 4 to 6 months. It was cloth. I think leather might make a more attractive chew. I'd wait on the new furniture, or get it and make sure it's covered. Put some cushions over the cover for his comfort.

| When we bought our house we wanted all new furniture, however we had our little girl at the time and my husband tried to convince me that she would destroy the leather. He said we needed to go with fabric, but we have a teenage skinkid that dont know what clean is. I convinced him I would rather chance the dog than the son. She never once tried to damage the furniture. We now have Dusty, he is really easy on the furniture. I've had it for three years now with no scratches or holes.

| None of my dogs have bothered my leather furniture. They *have* chewed the corners off my baseboards and wooden furniture . As far as what to do about trying to crawl up on the furniture, get a set of stairs. They shouldn't be jumping off the furniture anyway: it's bad for their backs. |

| Yes, to the stairs. We have a step stool that Gracie uses, Boo's too 'manly' to use it, he just jumps. Neither have every offered to chew our leather furniture...wood is a different story. Since Gracie is a pure blood Beagorkie (a Yorkie, Beaver, Goat), wood is one of her most favoritest things to chew. She'd even pull pieces off of the wood fence in the back yard! At 4 months of age, I would strongly suggest contain him somewhere when you aren't home and able to watch him. At 7-8 months of age my DH was tired of gating Gracie in the kitchen and left her loose a few times...bad decision. Even though she is through her teething stage, she is still a Beagorkie and still, aaaa cough-cough, loves to chew on things. Her Daddy agains gates her when he leaves. So getting furniture will probably be ok, you just need to keep a close eye on him because of his age. 1) Gracie the Beagorkie on our leather couch. Look how sweetly she's laying there...must have a full tummy from eating the leg off the end table.

| The replacement sofa is leather. Neither Squirt nor Gus has, surprisingly to me, shown any interest in chewing it.

| We have leather furniture and two yorkies, a lab and a golden. Ranger and the lab jump up on their own, but Ryder has to be picked up. The couch does not have any marks from the dogs getting up and down, and no one has ever threatened to chew... However, I could never leave my little ones out when we're gone because there are too many hazards, IMO.

| Sasha must have different cravings from other yorkies because she chewed our leather couch more than anything else when she was a young pup! I think it was partly due to boredom and her not being able to jump on the couch yet so she was could teeth and claw at it. Fortunately it's an old couch and we never intended on keeping it. And she's getting to be a girl now (8 months) and can jump up on her own and enjoys chewing flossies and her stuffed monkey (Fred) much more. |
