However, I'm more of a Dog Pamperer. I bought some doggysteps that allow them to climb up and down whenever they want. We have leather furniture and two Yorkies, and we've never had a problem. I'm not offering a guarantee, but I know it's possible.

I had a second set in the bedroom, but I ran into some dominance issues there, so they have to be invited onto the bed now. No steps.

I believe you can get them at Wal-Mart for a reasonable price. I bought mine online. I think this is the place where I got them. At least it shows what I'm talking about.

Doggy Steps from Telebrands Corp. Official Page

Another thing that might help is getting him some safe chew toys to occupy his time. Bully sticks. Kongs. Whatever he likes and is safe.

If you were real paranoid, you could restrict his freedom while you're away. Baby-gate him in the kitchen or bathroom or even consider kenneling.
omg, those steps are so cheap! i have 1 set and would like more, but i find them for $80 everywhere. $20 is awesome, I'm going to order a few from that site, thanks!
