| New member Hi Everyone, My name is Judy, and my little yorkie is Romeo. I've been on this group for a very long time, but could never figure out how to post. Lol I am not comp literate. Anyway, Romeo turned 3 last January. We adopted him from Florida, as the man who had him was breeding him and then wanted nothing to do with him. He is absolutely beautiful and we love him to pieces. We have a couple of issues, one being potty training. He will go out side but then comes in and pee's wherever it floats his boat to do so. The other issue is his coat and skin, which seem to be very oily. Now he has what the vet calls blackheads on his belly and chest area, and the groomer says thats because of his oily skin and playing in dirt???? I bathe him weekly but the groomer says we need an exfoliating shampoo which is only available through a vet...so far I can not find a vet in my area that has that. This morning I did something I never would have done, but because he seemed so miserable I had to do something. I put a bit of dawn dishwashing liquid in a container and added water. I used that for his first shampp, then I used his neem shampoo and rinsed extremely well. I also just lightly blow dryed him, not being sure if drying irritates his skin. Anyway, since doing that about a half hour ago, he has been sleeping very peacefully and no scratching. Has anyone else had this issue? he is only 5 lbs (supposed to be 3 1/2) and is exhausted from scratching all the time. Any help or advice was be very appreciated. Judy and Romeo |

| Hello and welcome! I would use a good shampoo made for dogs and no conditioner for the oiliness. You have to be careful using the dawn. It takes away all the oil and can leave them dry skin and hair. The only time I use it is when i see a flea on mine because it kills fleas

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Hi and welcome to YorkieTalk, I'm glad little Romeo found a good home. Many people don't understand that there is a difference between peeing and marking. An unneutered male dog marks her territory to show other dogs that he's been there, and he's the head honcho. If neutered earlier enough most male dogs won't mark in the house, but they still mark outside. If I were you, I would consider neutering, if you haven't already, and also purchasing bellybands. A bellyband is simply a cloth with Velcro fasteners that goes around the tummy area; you place a sanitary pad inside it to catch the urine that comes from marking. You remove it several times a day when the dog goes outside to pee, and it shouldn't used it as a diaper, but just as a way to catch the drips from marking. We have a grooming forum with many good threads, you might find some advice there for your grooming problem. I have read that oatmeal makes a good exfoliant, you just make a paste of oatmeal and warm water, and rub on the tummy area.

| Hello and welcome! It can be difficult finding specialty shampoos but they sell a couple online. I've heard great things about the Apricot Exfoliating Shampoo by HydroSurge. I personally haven't tried it but I do use a lot their other products and love them. If you google them you'll find their website or you can go through other specialty doggie spa websites that sell hi end products. Good luck.

| Yes, we had Romeo neutered right after getting him. And I did make my own belly bands and use panty shields. My husband says I'm embarrassing him (Romeo) with the girlie things lol, but it has saved alot of pee/marking and my back. Soon as I figure out how, I will start adding pictures. |

| Finally Romeo's groomer said she can order some good stuff for him. She has reccomended we may want to get him a puppy cut for one untill his tummy and chest clear up and two because of the belly bands. I am dreading doing this as his hair is so beautiful, but will do what is in his best interest. I'm going to see if I can find that shampoo you reccomended. Thanks so much Judy and Ro |

I don't see how cutting the back hair will help the chest clear up. I would think long and hard about this. So few Yorkies have beautiful coats, and many have to have a puppy cut because they have a cotton coat. I know this is a favorite cut of groomers, but it takes forever to grow, and you have to go through some growing out pains where you're tempted to cut it again. Are you sure it's in his best interest or hers?

| I agree with you completely and am going to keep his hair just as it is. Yes I heard the cotton coat gets really knotted whereas the silky coat just gets some tangles. Romeo is my first yorkie and I have so much to learn. I just want to do everything right. BTW will his marking stop. He has been neutered over a year now. |

| ugh that doesn't sound to promising. lol, well he is doing better and does seem to do much better in the house when he is praised for going outside. Its a work in progress I suppose and only time will tell if Romeo ever stops. I've been using simple solution and found that works pretty darn well. If anyone knows of anything better please let me know. The other problem was that the man never allowed Romeo outside. I think he used puppy pads for him. While Ro will use the pads, he will also go behind furniture etc. I wish he had trained him to a cat box I will work harder with him and appreciate the advice very much. Judy |
