| Docking a tail after 6 months??? We live in the UK and we got our puppy from a breeder here, and when we picked her up I was surprised to see that she still had her long tail! It turns out it is now illegal to chop dogs tails here (as of April '08). My husband and I would really like her to have a short stubby tail, and if we were to bring her back to Canada on vacation we were thinking of having her tail chopped there. She would be at least 6 months, probably older by the time we could get to Canada. What are your thoughts on this? Will it really hurt her now that she's grown? Should we just forget about it? Has anyone had this done when their pup was older? |

| I wouldnt do it. It is the same as an amputation at that age and yes it is painful Breeders usually do it when they are a couple of days old and their nerve endings arent so progressed

| It is a complete full Surgery and anytime your dog goes under anesthesia for any reason their is great risks. I will tell you they do try to figure out what happened to their tail after having that long, with that said yes I have had it done before. I would not want to do it again. She did fine, I was the one that was bothered by it. They are actually quite cute when they have their tails. Good luck on your decision, Deana Prestigeous |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I personally wouldn't do it at this age either, but I have read some amazing results using the laser technique. Someone in the breeders forum said that a show dog whose owner wanted to enter him in a U.S. show had the laser surgery done on his tail, and the next day was healed enough to enter the show. You might want to research more on laser surgery if you are considering docking the tail.

| I would not do it, My BIL had a Rott pup done when it was a few months old an dit was a mess, there was not enough skin to cover the bone for it to close heal good, and the stitches kept getting ripped out over and over. they would wake up to blood every where. taking a chance on infection to set in too. and they have to be put to sleep to do this, and yes its a lot more painful. its not like having it down when their a few days ond. |

| Tails are BEAUTIFUL. Don't dock, especially at this age. If I ever have another Yorkie, I am going to try to get one with a full tail. |

| It is not allowed in the UK for a reason and I suggest you did not do it as if you go back to the UK with a docked tailed dog you are in for a long hard life of explaining why. Your vet in the Uk will know as will your nieghbour and some may not play nice.....Just a thought. What the others have said and at this late date it a loss of a limb and they are going to know it. If it for health reasons great like caught in a fan or run over or what ever and there is no choice go for it. A tail is what a dog used to talk to other dogs and it hard if they have had it to not understand why all of a sudden the dogs he playing with no longer understand him. Just thoughts but he is your dog do as you wish. JL |
