| I don't work out of the home now. But when I did I was gone for 9 hrs or 10 a day. I hated it as well. But worked too far to go home during the day. I would put a few soft toys or chew toys in with them. I gated them in the bathroom. They would always be waiting for me when I got home.

| I'm not, because I work from home But I still got my first one a companion because I WORK from home. She used to sit and nibble at my feet or just stare at me. I felt like she was saying, "Mom, I'm here. Here, Mom! Look this way! Play with me!" I felt terribly guilty because she had nothing to do while I was working, so I got a rescue. Yorkies don't value "quiet time" the same as some dogs do. They're very social. I got another, then another, then another. Now they all play together, but they still love when I lie down on the floor and play with them, or take them outside a few times a day. Even with four of them now, when I'm away for errands and grocery shopping for a couple of hours, you'd think I was running a kennel here with all the barking when I get home. They act like they haven't seen me for a week. Last edited by jadecomputergal; 08-27-2008 at 03:02 AM. Reason: Adding a comment. |

| I work an hour away from home so I'm gone from about 7 am to 6 pm but my husband is an insurance adjustor and works out of the house. He is on the road part of each day but it's pretty rare that he's gone for more than 5 hours or so at a stretch. I know Tatum is happy though to rest in her kennel while we're gone because if we are home all day, she gets plenty of naps in. She's a whirlwind late at night though right before bed and gets played with pretty hard first thing in the morning also. And yes, whether I'm gone 8 hours or 10 minutes, it's a kissy-fest when I walk back in the door!!

| I'm away from them for about 5-6 hours during the day. However, they are only by themselves for about 2-3 hrs each day. |

| I work from home so Chloe and I spend most of the day together during the week. She may be in her crate 1-2 hours a day if I have meetings, errands, etc. She may spend a bit more time in her crate on weekends if we have a lot going on. |

| I have a similar schedule -- do you leave the TV or radio on for "company" for Buddy, or do you think most dogs don't mind the quiet? I don't have my Yorkie yet, but was just wondering what people do |

When he was a puppy I did leave the radio on but he couldn't have cared one way or the other. He had seperation anxiety and I did purchase a couple of things to help. The plug in, which emits a smell like the mother, I think helped some. He barked terribly. Then I found coins in a can worked like magic. That is really the only thing that made him stop barking. Today he just wines softly when I close the door. He sleeps, I would guess, because he touches nothing, not even a treat, until I open the door. Then we both do a happy dance like nuts. It takes time but they do adjust to your lifestyle. It is so important to give them time in the am before you leave. I have been sitting on the floor, drinking coffee for four years from 6:30-7:00 am playing with him. I get up 1/2 hr earlier for him. They need their bonding time before you leave them for long periods. Good luck, Last edited by ARCHIE; 08-27-2008 at 06:38 AM. | |

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Mine are sooo spoiled. I have worked from home for 7 years so all but my non-yorkies have had me home forever. Now hubby is retired so they have lots of company everyday. If we go shopping on the weekend even for an hour they act like we were gone for weeks when we get home. SOOOOOOOO spoiled!!

| I am going back to work and I am gone longer than my boyfriend, so Louie stays home for about 9 hours by himself. He has a tough time (separation anxiety) but I am confident he will grow out of it. He doesn't play with his toys, so when i get home he is full of energy and ready to play. We also left a video camera on the tripod to see how he is. As soon as I left, he peed on the carpet (anxiety!), walked around looking for someone and barked and cried for about 15 minutes. Then he just slept the rest of the time! Whatever your schedule may be, I'm confident he will adjust. I'm not that lucky to work from home!

| I'm gone 9-10 hours a day. What does Layla do while I'm gone? She SLEEPS! If I get home from work before my roommates, she's not waiting at the door for me. The house is completely quiet. I walk into my bedroom and I can always find her laying on my bed with her tail wagging, and stretching out her legs from a long nap Even on days when I'm home sick, or I take a day off work, she will still sleep the afternoon away. It's her routine now!

| I'm struggling with the same guilt...I leave for work around 8AM and come back anytime from 6 to 7 PM. I work too far away to come home to tend to Nala. For now I have her in a crate all day, Im trying to save up some money for a new nylon ex-pen that another YT member recommended. (My nala climbs out of the regular ones and I was afraid she would hurt herself) But I really love my fur baby and she loves me, so when I get home I rub her belly for like 10 minutes and go about getting her food ready and so on. The one thing I feel guilty about is going to the gym and running errands during the week...I'm trying to work on doing those things on the weekends...but it's rough...but I'm sure we'll work through it... |
