| Is A yorkie a good choice for anxiety prone people? I was wondering if a yorkie is a good breed for individuals witn anxiety. I know pets are wonderful for relieving stress and good for our blood pressure, but does breed play into this? For instance, a dalmation, jack russel, weimeraner etc..are very high energy dogs..which to me can add to stress. I am excluding such factors as vet bills and potty training and other small things...I know yorkies are higher maintanance. Just want honest to goodness opinions. Thanks |

| In my opinion you need nerves of steel to raise Yorkies. I would suggest something more sturdy and not so high maintenance. How about a French Bulldog? They aren't high stress dogs, but they have fantastic temperaments, fairly easy to train and care for, and I'm partial to their adorableness!

| Sophie is high energy at times. She needs to run and play. I think she helps with my anxiety at times. We are very close, she seems to understand me and comfort me when I need it. I also have a routine going with her that keeps us both on track. Her grooming is very calming to me as well. But as you said the potty training has been pretty time consuming. Hope that helps. |

| I call Milo my puppy prozak.....I would say first you must identify what your needs are in a dog and then look for a dog that meets those needs. Research is very important the right dog can do wonders for thier person. Good Luck |

| My yorkies definitely relieve my stress and anxiety because they make me laugh all the time with their antics, and they are so loving and cuddly. In my opinion, yorkies are high maintenance, but I enjoy taking care of them and don't know what I ever did without them.

| I know how you feel.... my Gracie has HELPED SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much!!!! I have ptsd or post traumatic stress disorder... and let me tell you I am SOOOOOOOOOO much better for having my little baby! she is such a blessing to me! yes the whole potty training is a PAIN IN THE BUTT but you have to do that with EVERY puppy! and I like the fact the Gracie is small enough to go with me EVERYWHERE I go! I also like that shes not too heavy and I can always pick her up and cuddle with her... she helps calm me down and when Im having a bad day she ALWAYS makes me laugh! so IMHO I think a Yorkie would be THE BEST breed for you!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | That's such a great question ! I want to say they are the best medicine ...(and they are but many dogs are) then again - they can stress us out very easily from worrying about them.... on the flip side - they provide unconditional love - but yet - they also can put us thru hoops.....they can cheer us up in the darkest times - yet they can cause the darkest times...(if we think something is wrong with them) am I going back and forth too much ??? I did it on purpose - can you tell I've been a bit stressed ? To be serious...if your anxiety is really bad - why not adopt from the shelter and save a pet ? There are soooo many out there already potty trained and looking for a great home Yorkies are pretty ...no - VERY high maintenance |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My yorkies are my heart and soul. Yes they take years off my life from worry when they get sick but to me it is all worth it. I also suffer from an anxiety disorder. I found mine are active for a bit and then rest. i have had 7 over the years and none of them were hyper after the puppy stage. I would just research breeders, get a healthy one and ask about temperments.

That being said, I think if I had chronic anxiety I would be unable to handle the stress of owning a Yorkie. I can't tell you how many heart stopping moments I have had worrying about choking, someone taking them, sickness, etc. They are very fragile dogs and there are a lot of stressful situations because of that. Any dog that you come to love will help you to ease your stress, I agree with that and it has, in fact, been proven medically. However, there are other breeds (including those found in shelters like V suggested) that will bring you those same health redeeming qualities without the stressfulness of owning a Yorkie. Just my opinion.

| Just my opinion I think raising aYorkie is it's own sort of stress....especially the very small ones. You have to be so carefull, and so in tune to them. I've had many Yorkies now, the more you learn, the more you releize the things you don't know. I'd suggest a little larger laid back breed for a person whom is really stressed. I love them to death, or I wouldn't have them, but, they are not for everyone. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Interesting thread. I think it depends on what type of anxiety you mean; someone who worries about every little thing, or someone who is more of a specialist. I think for most people pets do help relieve anxiety, but for certain types of individuals pets may increase anxiety. For example, there was a member who claimed to be a clean freak, and many other members who identified with her responded to her thread. They explained how they had found ways to adjust to a puppy, and still keep a clean house. With this member it was different though, and her anxiety surpassed the normal range. She described how her little puppy would hide under the glass table shaking all the time. She used her vacuum often, and this does scare puppies, and even some dogs, but she was unable to relax her cleaning habits. She finally decided to rehome her yorkie. However, for the typical, "worry wart", I think pets relieve stress. I just want to add, before I got Joey, everyone was talking about what high maintenance dogs yorkies are, and I just have not found that to be the case. This again, I think is an individual thing. A Golden Retriever, I think is high maintenance because of his high exercise needs and the fact that they shed so badly. Joey does need daily grooming, but he never sheds. I give him a bath once a week, but this is really enjoyable to me rather than running 10 miles with him. Did you like playing dolls when you were a child? If so, think this is a good indication that a Yorkie is a good pet for you. All you men just replace the word "action figure" for "doll". Psychologists have found that most people are better off if they can focus on other things rather then themselves. That's why yorkies and other pets can be used as service dogs for people who suffer from panic attacts.

| Great..Did I mention I have allergies..so my choices are limited. I think I have owned almost every popular breed, a chihuahua, a cocker spaniel, a golden retriever, husky, and pug. Except the pug, all were rescues. I think as I get older I am more anxious. I love, love, love animals. I think it is funny how we waste so much energy on the "what ifs". I don't want a large breed. It has to be indoors here most of the year cause of the heat. I have a fish..she is sweet but I can't hold her. haha..will a calm layed back puppy make a calm adult? |
