Can puppy mate with my female???? I know I may sound like a complete & total idiot.... but, we just got a new puppy who is 11 weeks old. I also have a female who is 4 years old. SHe has not shown any signs of going into heat, at least that I am aware of. HOwever.... he was just caught humping her, and the crazy part is that SHE ALLOWED IT!!!! I am very disturbed, and dont' know what is going on! How can I tell if she is in heat, and PLEASE tell me that he can't impregnate her! Thanks in advance!!!

WOW - If you are concerned, you should have your female spayed as soon as possible. I also recommend neutering your male when he becomes of age (6 months) - The reasons are to make sure they do not have successful mating and it really is in their best interests, it protects them from cancer.

He is ONLY 11 weeks old. There will be NO neutering him until he is 6 months old. So, in the meantime... my question is, is it even possible for him to impregnate her? I would doubt so, because his testicles at 11 weeks have not even dropped. And, in all likelyhood she is not even in heat... as she hasn't had one in almost 2 years. I have not spayed her because as of yet there has been no need to. My vet says that it's possible that she will never have another heat & thus unnecesary to put her through the spay procedure. I will call him tomorrow, just thought someone here might know for sure whether it was possible.

pup Don't be surprised if your bitch decides to come into heat with a male in the house now...I would spay her to be safe and perhaps prevent pyrometra. Some bitches have a silent heat or one ever so slight the owner is not aware until it is too late..best of luck

There's no danger of him impregnating her at this stage. One thing to watch for is to not let him hump too much. We had a little male that prolapsed his penis from humping a stuffed animal when he was a puppy. Not a pretty sight and no fun to deal with!! If your female is in heat, you'll see a vaginal discharge followed by a swollen vagina. Some girls keep themselves very clean so you may not notice the discharge but she will be cleaning her area more. If your girl is 4 years old and has never bred, you wouldn't want her to get pregnant. It can be very dangerous for the mom and the pups. It sounds like you don't want them to breed so just keep an eye out until you feel comfortable getting your boy neutered. In all likelihood, his behavior will alert you to your girl being in heat before she would be ready to take a male.
