| Strangers stay away! I had my first run in with a stranger yesterday wanting to hold my dog. My husband, Carlos and I went to our local ice cream shop yesterday since it was so nice out and of course there were a lot of people there. Carlos and I stayed in the car while hubby went to get us ice cream. I had the window down and Carlos had his head poked out checking the scene out and some lady comes over with her daughter and starts with the "oh my he is so cute blah blah blah" Okay he is cute and loves when people make a big out of him. Then she sticks her hand in my car and grabs him while saying "do you mind if I hold him?" AHHHHHH! Do not grab my dog out of my car. I was ready to kill her. I told her as I grabbed him back "I would prefer if you didnt" She didn't like that very much but oh well. Were do some people get off. I didn't know her but she could have taken off with him before I could get out of the car. I am almost afraid to take him somewhere.

| It happens... all the time. These Yorkies are certainly people magnets and can draw both good and bad attention. Dont be affraid to tell them NO...I dont allow people to hold my dog. Ive said that more than once.... There is nothing wrong with that, and if they dont like it, Oh well...

| When I saw the heading, I thought you were trying to scare away new people from the boards LOL Wow, that was really cheeky and I don't blame you for getting upset. I would NEVER think of doing that to someone, especially when they're sitting in their car. Holy personal space, batman! Besides, would anybody reach into a car and grab somebody's baby or child and say "oh, can I hold him?". Of course not! (hopefully). Some people have no clue... |

| If I am holding Ellie people like to pet her but if she is on the ground she barks and growls and they are turned off. I can't believe someone would stick their hand in your car.

| I let mine socialize with family and friends and neighbors that I'm familiar with but when it comes to strangers what works for me is when someone starts oohing and aahing and reaching towards them I quietly say, "Now, don't you bite!" and the person always pulls back. Of course mine only want to lick you to death and wouldn't bite a flea but it works on keeping strangers away - LOL!

| I am going to have to try that if it happens again. Carlos would lick a hole in someones arm before he would bite one! LOL

| You did the right thing. She might have held him and ran with him...even the most innocent, sweet looking people can be thieves. Also I would never leave a dog alone in the car even even when the temperature isn't a problem....thieves know how to break in quickly and grab what they want.

I've done that too!!! Works brilliantly. I dont know what that lady was thinking, I think you handled it good though. I don't think people should even attempt to pet your dog unless they've asked!!!

| I do NOT allow anyone to hold my dogs ever. If they don't like to, oh well too bad for them. It's not open for discussion, period. I'm VERY firm on this. You never know a strangers intentions or how your dof will react to a strange person holding them. They could get scared and squirm a lot and the person could drop them on the floor and seriously hurt them. I won't even get into someone trying to steal them because that is obviously the number one reason why I don't allow people to hold my dogs but there are other reasons in addition to that big one.

| people will always do this unfortunately ... i would never do it to someone and i would have reacted the same way the OP did ... geez, what are people thinking? it is kind of along the same lines as people who will go up to a pregnant woman and start touching her belly without permission even if they are a complete stranger! i would be so NOT cool with that! JMO though

| Hubby says when we go to Petsmart, it takes so much time to get from the grooming in back to the front to pay cause people are always stopping us to pet Gypsy. He has learned to go in with me to carry her so he can stop and let her be petter but no one tries to take her away from a 6 foot 300 lb man.

I also have learned as said above by others, when people reach for her I just gently say no biting Jinxy and they'll usually pull back thinking she might. Jinxy wouldn't hurt a fly all she does is lick my hands and arms all the time.. Last edited by Jinxy; 01-09-2008 at 12:13 PM.
