ugh Frustrated with the potty training! I need help!! so my yorkie is almost 4 months old and i have been trying despereately to train him to go outside. When i first got him (very young and way too small at 8 weeks) the vet told me he wasnt alowd out until he put on some weight and closer to 12 weeks..so i trained him to use pee pads. now when i take him outside (constantly at least 5 times a day or more) he wont go and i can tell he is holding it and as soon as we get in the house he goes!! it has been almost three weeks of this..taking him out 5 times plus and hasnt gone outside once! any advice please!!

Place the pads outside and you could make them smaller as time goes, and if you get him to go where you want him to immediately give him a treat.

Well, obviously if he doesn't go outside, you DON"T want to give him the opportunity to go inside either. I would take him outside on his leash (so he knows what door to go out) always take the same route..Take him to the same spot in your yard (you can try several things..spray something from the pet store that stimulates pee, take a pee pad out there that has pee on it already). Take him to the spot and say a command, I use "go pee". Give it a little while for him to sniff or whatever. I know its frustrating sometimes they just stand there and look at you as if they have NO clue, and he might not. If he doesn't go then take him inside and crate him (I work with crates). Leave him in the crate for another 10-15min and then take him outside again repeating the same thing until he goes. Once he goes..Praise like all heck. You will need to continue to do this consistently. I know when I get a puppy I take off an entire weekend (fri/sun) and work strictly on house training, some dogs it sticks quicker then others. The object is when you bring him in he has to be confinded if he didn't go outside, otherwise, he will go inside. My 2yr old Yorkie is completely house trained (only has had 3 accidents since over 1yr), my Biewer is 6months and he is about 98-99% trained, but I still crate him when I go to work (I go home at lunch). When I'm home now he can run around, but I have constant watch over him and run him outside at least every 1/2hr right now. When I take a shower or bath, he comes in there with me either in his crate or I bring his bed in there. Hardest part is teaching him to let me KNOW when he has to go outside, right now I just have to kinda guess. Hang in there. Kathy

| 5 times a day is not constantly. Loki goes outside constantly (he has issues) and he's out there every 30-45 mins. He just rang his bells as I was typing this... You also need to stay outside until he goes.

Try moving his pee pad closer and closer to the door, and take it outside with you, he will get the idea.

What do you mean "rang his bells"? I would like to be able to train my Mugzy to alert me (or the kids) when he has to go out. How did you do that?

ugh Frustrated With Potty Training The bells that I have are known as POOchie-Bells and you can buy them over the Internet. I would not recommend trying to use them until your Yorkie is old enough to be trained to follow simple commands. The idea is that you hang the bells (which are secured on a sturdy ribbon) on the inside of the door that your dog typically goes out to pee/poop and leave them there all the time. At first, every time you take your dog out, you give the same command, such as "Outside?. . . Ring the Bells!" And the people who make these suggest that everyone in the house give the same exact command when letting the dog out. After stating the command, you ring the bell in front of the dog where he can see it and hear it. In time, the idea is that the dog will do it himself to alert you that he needs to go outside. Hope this is helpful information!
