Do I expect too much?? Am I asking waaaaaay too much of Lola to somewhat control her urges to go the bathroom all over the house? I know she is still very young (4 months) but it seems like she doesn't grasp the concept of "outside" at all.... And I don't even want to get into bedtime - from what I've read I've already destroyed any chance of her getting out of my bed, huh? We are crate training - she stays in there when we are not home and pretty much has free range to run and tire herself out while we're home - the only problem is that once she is done running around I usually am cleaning up more than one "mistakes". Any tips? Is setting up a whole pen area for her a good idea?? Thanks for your help!

| If she is messing all over the house - then the answer to your question is - YES! As Cesar would say "Rules, Boundries, Limitations" Think about it -the pup has no idea what you want from it. The only thing he knows is "I need to potty". If you do not set rules, boundries and limitations the pup will potty wherever he feels is best for him. You need to decide what the rules are, then figure out how to enforce them. You cannot expect a puppy to know what you want - you have to work with them. Puppies shouldnt have free run of the house until they understand all the rules and respect them. There are some great plans for crate training on this site - go to search and read some of the plans then figure out what will work best for you and implement it. Be consistant and with some work on your part your pup will be trained. Good luck

I swear it took mine almost two years to figure out the puppy pad and bathroom rugs were two different things.

Yes, she should not have free run of the house. She should be only in the kitchen on bare floors so you can clean it up. They need to be watched very closely, because if you do not get her outside you will never train her. It is a full time job, a job I do not think I will ever do again. When you cannot watch her she must be in a crate. You need to take her out all the time and praise her for going. She is only 4 months old, you will probable have to watch her and confine her till she is 9-10 months old...... PUPPY'S ARE WORK !!!!!! God Bless

When I first brought my pup home, I made sure that I was free for the next two weeks, just so I could devote the entire time to housebreaking(it's a 24 hour job at first) After that, he has been on a schedule that never varies. We've had him for 6 months now and he is very reliable as long as I keep the schedule(which I do). Out every two hours during the day, being fed at the exact times daily, etc. The first 4 months, I even set the alarm for the middle of the night. He is crated at night and in the kitchen only unless I know he has just peed and pooped. I watch him like a hawk and will not feel comfotable until he has not had an accident for a year or more. He has not had an accident in the house in the last few months, but I still don't trust him out of my sight. In my opinion, the hard work and time committment involved in the first few months are worth it to have a well-trained and reliable puppy. It makes home life much more pleasant. I have done this with every dog and have had wonderful puppies. He will be my last, too, since my youngest will be leaving home in a few years and I am too old to go thru the work again.!
