| Potty Training...which option? Hi Guys, I am new here and we just got a teacup yorkie. He will be 12 weeks on tuesday. We live in montreal and its -5 outside now and will only get colder. I have been trying to potty train him on a pee pee pad, and he used it once or twice to pee, but since then will only pee or pooh outside. MOst of the times, he will pee outside and pooh inside the house somewhere. There was a time today where his wee-wee was wet and I could not find where he did it in the house. I was wondering if I should teach him to go outside using "Business" or inside on pee pee pads. I was also considering the bells technique. I just do not want to integrate more than one together and confuse him. My only concern about outside is the cold, since he is so small and would like to teach him to do it in one place of my balcony instead of just anywhere. Which techniques have you guys had the best luck with? Any urls with good lessons on training? For example today, he pooh'ed in the house and I did not see it until some time after when he was in his crate sleeping. I took him out of his crate, brought him to the spot and had him smell it, then picked him up from his neck and said NO, then said BUSINESS a few times and put him outside. Was this wrong? Should i of just ignored the issue since I saw it after it was done? Once I bring him back in, do I just forget about it or do I put him in his crate for a few mins? Thanks |

| my understanding is that you have to catch him in the act and say NO immediately, otherwise, the events just don't connect in their heads. if you put him in the crate after the fact, i'm not sure if he'll understand why. i have my pup confined in the kitchen and check the floors everytime i step into the kitchen so there's not "surprise" pee or poo sitting anywhere. If he goes off the pad, i just clean it up and mumble to myself.... but i don't reprimand him. since i live in a highrise with no patio or yard, i started on indoor training my pup. nowadays, he'll actually wait to get back indoors before does his business. he won't go outside. i hope to eventually both indoor and outdoor train him.... eventually... | ive heard the same thing. dont repremand them after the fact.. you must say something while they are doing it so they know at that time its the wrong place to do it. a big no..loud.... never rub their face in it either.i heard that too...thats why this site is so great, you learn more and more everyday..

| K thanks.....today I caught him pooh'ing, so I grabbed him and said NO...then business and put him outside. I saw that he continued outside. When he came back in, I gave him a treat....should I of done that or not? I gave it to him because he did it outside, but did that overstep the accident he did? Will it just tell him to do it inside and you get a treat? |

| I dont think that you are supposed to get on to the puppy after they have done their "business" you are supposed to catch them in the act and then tell them no. Just ignore it if you find something. Actually to tell you the truth I just got a puppy a month ago and she was not trained at all. I trained mine on potty pads and when I first started training her I would tell her no everytime that she went on the floor and then take her immediately to her potty pad and say go potty. Well she was not catching on at all. I got some advice from someone on her that said just to ignore it when they go on the floor, but when they do go on their potty pad then to praise, praise, praise, and give them a treat. Daisy has caught on very good and she goes on her pad about 90 percent of the time. Keep in mind that these puppies sometimes do take awhile to train so just have patience and it will happen before you know it. I hope that all of this made since to you. Good luck to you and Congrats on your new baby.

| i treat immediately after good behavior (within 3-5 seconds after). so in your case, when i catch him in the act, i'd say NO, take him outside, wait until he finishes, and immediately after he finishes praise and treat. don't even wait to come back inside before treating. puppies have short attention spans. treating needs to be done immediately for them to make the connection. |

| ok guys.....catching snickers in the act does nothing. I show him his pee pad and its over so there is nothing i can do. I like the idea of a treat. What treat do you recommend? |

| I'm using Honey Nut Cheerios. Just one is all it takes, but then my Zoe is only 2 lbs. When she goes outside and does her business, she has started expecting her Cheerio. It's really cute. Wish you the best!!! |

| I have read that they only have a 3-4 second recall for when they "do" something. So if you find it after that, you aren't supposed to say anything to them. Also, they are not supposed to see you cleaning it up because they might think that Mommy is accepting their gift! I just read that this afternoon. If you catch them doing something, say "NO" so they will stop. Grab them and take them outside to finish. Good luck!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I use the Jump Start wee wee pads from Petsmart and I don't know if it's that or I was lucky or a bit of both but Cali trained so easily on them. By 4 months old she was pretty much completely wee wee pad trained. She hasn't had an accident in several months.

I know whenever Layla sees me cleaning up she chases the paper towel around like it's a game! I end up holding her with one hand and cleaning with the other!

| Training Just a note from my experience - as puppies Yorkies may not know that having an "accident" on the floor or carpet is wrong, but as they get older I think they know right from wrong. When my Emmie (who is now 3) was about 1 or 1-1/2 years old she would come to me and scratch on my leg and then sit down and hang her head. I would go looking and sure enough, I would find a puddle or poop!!! From then on, if she came to me like she was trying to tell me something, I would know that she had had an accident. This rarely happens at all now but I know she knows that she has done wrong if and when it happens. She is puddle pad trained because we live in the country and have no fenced back yard, and all the neighbors in the outlying homes have big dogs who roam freely in our area, as well as the coyotes and owls. Now we have a new puppy and are starting all over with the training!!! Good luck.... Barbara, Emmie and Izzy B. |
