Teeth Water bottle really works to stop barking!!!!

I don't remember who suggested it - maybe Teresa Ford - but our Jax had become a barking maniac. No one could come in the house or walk down our street without him going off. Could not take him anywhere. When we were camping, it was very embarrassing to me that he was so ill-mannered. But . . . all that changed with just a little spray bottle of water!

I used the "quiet" command to him and if he did not stop (of course he didn't) he got a stream sprayed at him. He DID NOT like it at all. It took about two weeks of somewhat sporadic training but when I took him on a camping trip last weekend it was like a miracle! It finally paid off and he would stop when I asked him. Our neighbors had the CUTEST Biewer ever who was also a barker. This kind of egged Jax on but I was able to get him to stop even with another barker around, in fact, they said "spray our dog too"!

I did go to Walmart and got several small spray bottles so I could have them handy around the house. Very small investment . . . VERY BIG PAYOFF!!!

Hmm, so you use the command so he'll still bark when it's appropriate, right? I'm trying to figure this out for myself because Mojo is becoming quite the barker. I want him to let me know when someone is coming, but I'd like to train him to stop barking once I've acknowledged him. We live on a street with lots of people walking dogs & babies, joggers, bikers, etc. I appreciate him patrolling the grounds, but I need to figure out how to get him to stop once I tell him it's OK.

I forgot about the water bottle. I did that with Jack when he was younger and he is starting to bark crazy again. I'll have to get my bottle out. LOL

Was funny it got to the point when I would say quiet and he would not stop all I had to do was reach for the bottle and he would stop. He knew what quiet meant, little stinker.

thank you for this. i am learning how annoying the barking can be. when i first got her she was so quiet, now it s like she barks for no reason. granted barking to wake me up to go outside or potty is one thing. barking when i run upstairs to go get laundry, not necessary. barking at a window, not necessary lol. it gets frustrating sometimes.

Default Barking

We just purchased a "As Seen on TV" Stop Barking thingy. It gives off a noise that Isa doesnt like, but that we cant hear. Im not sure about it yet. I dont like not being able to hear the thing for myself. Not sure if its ok for her, although the package says it is. It has two settings, High and Low.
Its working, but she started shaking from it. So I will surely try the water bottle tech next.
Anyone have any experience with these "Stop Barking" items?
I use the "No Bark" command. I dont want her to think that she never can bark. This is so hard. She's suppose to bark, just not continuously!!!

i was just going to buy a no bark device you plug in the wall, not a collar but wasnt sure if it would work. i might buy just to put in when i know she isnt going to bark for a particular reason.

Its really a matter of finding what works for your dog. It may be a spray from a water bottle or making a noise bit I always think you should do what you did which was give a no bark command so the dog will eventually just respond by your command. Great job with your training progress

What we've been doing is let him bark a few times to alert us, then give the quiet command. Then spray if he ignores us. Or praise if he does get quiet.

I've read that you are supposed to let them bark a little before telling them quiet, and that will eventually teach them that warning barks are okay.

Last night there was a kitten scratching at our back door to get in, and the door is glass so the kitten was literally in Jax's face. He couldn't stand it! He was soaked by all the spraying.

(I'm tridntrue's daughter, btw)

I have answered on several threads and gone into detail about unwanted barking.
Briefly Training them to be Quiet, is better than Correcting after there is a problem.
1. Three Alert Barks are allowed. Then, Say your cue word for them to stop, always use the same word. We say 'ENOUGH' and when the are quiet Good QUIET. That way Enough always means stop right now what ever you are doing. Quiet is a good word, that means reward like pets or treats.
2. Start by teaching your dog the words when they are doing regular things. Playing ball, when feeding etc. When the dog barks say Bark (or Speak, Talk what ever seems natural to you) Allow three barks, then say Enough. If they are quiet, Say Good Quiet and reward. If they keep barking Cue with 'Enough' wait a few seconds then spray with short swift blasts of water. As soon as they are quiet, praise Good Quiet and Reward with pets and or treats.
3. You can teach your dog bark on cue. It only take a few days for a puppy to understand Barking Alerts or Barking when asked is good. Quiet is Good too. Enough mean Stop it right now. Good luck, if you have more questions PM me.

LOL I am sorry to rush through that lesson. A short summation is 1. When they bark you let them bark 3 times. 2. Then cue with Enough. 3. if they stop Barking say Good Quiet. 4. If they keep barking after you tell them Enough, Correct: cue with Enough, wait 3 barks then spay with water one quick squirt. Pause it helps to count to yourself one, two, three, four, five; you have to give the dog time to obey. If they keep barking repeat ENOUGH squirt again. 5. The second they are quiet praise with Good Quiet and reward.

Wonderful advice!! So love YT have learned a lot in a short while. I have to try this with my Annie. She loves to tell us her thoughts. Sometime she just doesn't know when to stop. She is quite the Chatty Cathy.

got it. so only good quiet when she is aactually silent AFTEr having barked, not just randomly for not barking during times she usually would.

bark, bark bark
ENOUGH

if quiet "good quite, good girl:

if still barks ENOUGH with squirt.

if quiet, "good quite, good girl"

if not quiet, squirt again

Excellant advice, I have a little barker, and I think some of the things I say and do encourage more barking. For example, I say "no bark", and he starts barking. I'm going to print your post out, my husband and I have to be on the same page with this and use the same words. I have several different aversive things I use with limited success, pennies in the can and the bark repeller, but I think using the right words will help too.
