| My puppy is regressing! What am I doing wrong? Hi there, I have a 4.5 month old Morkie male who was doing ok with his potty training until about 2 weeks ago. Before, he would always let us know when he needed to poop and it was really just the peeing that was the problem. About 2 weeks ago he STOPPED showing us signs of him needing to poop, and he just poops in the house. I don't understand - I feel like I am doing everything right. I clean up the accident spots with that Nature's Miracle stuff every time. I feed him and take him out on a schedule, I keep him crated when I can't watch him, and when I do watch him I try to make sure he's where I can see him (we have baby gates around the living room and pretty much confine him to that area). Lately he has been sneaking under the end table by the couch to poop! It's truly impossible to watch him for every single second that he's out of his crate! He seems to do it when I'm writing an email or otherwise taking my eyes off of him for a few moments. He's also started peeing places he never has before, like the kitchen floor. Is it possible that he was doing well for a while, and now he's regressing?? He's not neutered yet (will be next month) and has also started marking things outside. There have been no major changes in our schedules or lives. He pees and poops when he's taken outside, and he always gets praise and a little treat right away when he does it. HELP! What should I do? I can't keep him crated 24 hours a day but I also can't follow him around for our entire waking existence! I am at a loss. Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice would be appreciated! | I think dogs almost always regress during potty training, especially at this young age. Just keep on doing everything you are doing and trying to catch him in the act but if not, when you see the poop or pee, just matter of factly and completely without rancor(yes, I know) take him somewhat near it so he can see it and with NO emotion at all, say "uh oh" and then take him outside, saying "go potty outside" or whatever you say when you take him out - very, very positive. He won't need to go because he just did but go through the process anyway of still connecting pee/poop with outside. Do your clean-up process without emotion as you have been and continue on with your schedule. Any puppy or adult dog I have potty trained has done very well at first when it is all new and exciting to learn this new thing - and then regressed. Just stick with your schedule and bear it all with the attitude of a saint as your baby WILL get it one day - and re-regress and get it again, etc. One day they finally do get it once and for all and it is done. I crate-trained Tibbe for nearly a year and he had episodes of regression but once the training was done, after a couple or so accidents, he became completely clean in the house with no further regression. Potty training smaller dogs can be more difficult but do not sell them short as my last 2 Yorkies have both been potty trained and clean in the house. During her last 2 years of life while I still worked, my former Yorkie would begin to use the potty pad by the back door if I stopped by the store before coming home and I could tell when I did finally get home that she had just toileted recently, so she held in as long as she physically could. And my current Yorkie will not use potty pads no matter what - he just holds everything all day! I wish he would use the pads if I have to be gone long but he just prefers going outside. Potty training a Yorkie can be done so be patient and consistent and above all, positive all the time. Sounds like you have it down pat but just did not expect the usual regression episodes. All my best to you and your new baby Yorkie!

| ^ Thank you so much for your thoughtful post! He IS much improved these last few days, and we are trying to be more patient. He hasn't peed in the house for many days now, and he only pooped once but that was actually our fault, not his. Sounds like it'll take the better part of a year before he's fully trained, so we'll just keep plugging away! |

| It does seem to take longer with small dogs and it sounds like you are right on track. Good luck!

| yorkies are just notorious for having a hard time potty training. you seem like you're doing it all ok to me. just keep at it. and like my aunt always told me. if your eyes are not going to be glued to the dog they need to be in the crate. we used the crate at home for a fast place to put them when we were busy cleaning, cooking, working, and we used a larger excersize pen for day times while we were gone more than an hour for more space with pee pads for a place to go in case. also teaching a puppy to ring a service bell helps them learn to tell you it's time to go outside. just set a bell by the door you always use and tap their paw onto the bell and say "OUTSIDE" and then take them out, if they go treat and reward, if not say nothing. doing this everytime you go out for potty they learn to tell you it's time rather than you having to pay attention all the time. good luck |
