| Crate training an older yorkie.....anyone? Can I do it? Cody is 4 years old. He use to sleep in his crate, although he has never really like it. I must not have trained him correctly in the first place cause he doesn't EVER WANT to go in it. Now my Izzy, she loves her crate, but that is another story. Here is the problem. If I leave him out at night he digs in the bathroom trash cans and chews up toilet paper OR he unrolls the entire roll and it is spread everywhere. So I have started putting him in his crate again. HE HATES IT. Now last night when he could tell we were winding down for bed, he went out the doggie door and wouldn't come back in. He is also bad about not coming when he is called. If he even thinks he is in trouble he will lay on the floor and roll over on his back. MAKES ME SO MAD He makes me go get him. ARGH Other than these two things he is about perfect as far as I can tell...LOL So does anyone have any advice on how to get him to start liking the crate or is this going to always be a battle?

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | do you put treats in his crate? Maybe put his favorite toy in there, and only give it to him when he goes in there. that will be his crate toy.

| No I don't put toys or treats in there. Should I do it a few times just to get him to walk in it? It may be mean to just put a treat in and shut him in there. Is that how it works?

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | To start out with I'd give him a treat every time he goes in there to associate the crate with good things. i'd also leave a crate toy in there so he feels he's not in detention. When i leave for work i tell morgan to go to her kennel and she runs in there with no problems. There are three toys in it. Sometimes i give her treats, some times i do not. SHe is in an ex-pen tho and not a crate but when she was a baby i had her in a crate with one toy.

| Ok so when I put him in there at night for bed, I should put a treat in there to get him to go in and close the door (with a toy as well). I just gave him practically 1/2 a bag of chicken treats and had him go "in" the crate to retreive them. It took him a while to go in but then he would run in grab them and run out. By the way is a 15 lb teapot.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | yup, throw the treat in the cage and then tell him to "go to bed" or "kennel up" or whatever you want to use. When he goes in close the door. You can put a toy in there too
