| living in a yorkie castle hi i'm new here, and new with dogs and yorkies... it's been 5 days since i've had my 3 mth old puppy and i'm loving him more each day!!! sorry for the lengthy description, but i really wanna find the best solution for my little guy. here's the problem! "unfortunately" i live in a 7000ft house, and for a yorkie, it's a GINORMOUS home!!.. @ first i chose to put him in the foyer of the house because there is a small step that seperates it from the rest of the house (which is not puppy proof and danger is lurking everywhere!!)... baubau (my yorkie) was not able to climb that step on the first day... so i thought this is a GREAT place, cuz its a pretty roomy area.... then what do u know... that same nite (when i went down to check up on my pup) i found out not only did he learn to climb that step, he was waiting for me @ that bottom of the stairs! i can't put fences around the foyer... so i decided to move him to the solarium on the second day w/ a 1.5 ft tall fence... the area was about the size of a pool table, but during that day, when he was walking around, he would just leave puddles and piles EVERYWHERE!!! (even when we're there and playing w/ him. so i thought maybe that's too much freedom, so i reduced the size of his living area to fit his crate, newspapers, food/water bowl, and approx 2ft in the middle. that night, i went to see if i had to change the papers... and to my surprise... he was sitting @ the bottom of the stairs again!... so i wrapped the fence in a cardboard hoping the pup has nothing to stick his foot in and boost himself up... that obviously didn't work either since i'm seeking for help now... that kept him in his space for one night (which i survellianced w/ my webcam) and i noticed that he spent the whole night trying to escape and on the fourth day, he succeeded. i really didn't want him to fall down the stairs or nething... and whenever he climbs out, he has no way to climb back in and use the papers... so he just goes ALL over the first floor... so yesterday (the 4th day) i took down the fence and gave him the WHOLE solarium (a place that can fit 4 king sized beds) hoping he'd be happier with a larger area (so he won't try to escape) and so he still has access to the newspapers... this morning... as i've expected, he was still in the solarium (baubau couldn't possibly climb a 3.5ft wooden board)... but the newspaper i set out for him last night was still clean.. then i found 4 puddles and 2 piles... (the seller of the dog told me he was "trained" to go on the newspaper...) i guess the dog somehow untrained himself.... today, after reading the forum, i've finally decided to close the doors of the crate for tonite... i'm hoping he can hold everything in till tmrw morning @ 6:30..... the whining and crying got me sad too... i must be doing something wrong! can some experienced owners give me suggestions? i'm really desprite for help since books doesn't explain my yorkie's behavior! thanz in advance!! s2je77 & baubau! |

| cant you just put him in your bedroom and shut the door? if your doing the crate method of training him then you can keep him in the crate at night but take him outside in the night for a wee if he needs to. I havent used a crate with Buddy but i know loads of people on here do, so if you search crate training you'l get some great advise. btw.. welcome and post some pics if you can

| I think you should keep him in the crate. It is probably the best place for him and your potty training efforts. It's not usual for the puppy to cry in the crate. If you give him something with your scent on it and do not yield to his crying, he will get over it. However, if you yield to his crying, the crying will get worse and worse. |

| Yorkies do best when they can be in contact with humans. Alone, they are not good citizens of the home. If you have a big house, then you must also have a yard. Take your baby outside (on a leash) every hour during the day and every two hours during the night. Remember it's a BABY. Babies cannot hold their bathroom waste all night. Their waste muscles are not strong yet. You will soon find that the more human contact you give, the easier it will be to train him.

| I agree. You absolutely have to crate him, even if he does cry. Try to get up in the middle of the night to let him out, or else he will go in his crate. Happy potty training! |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk and welcome BauBau! It sounds like you have a gorgeous home and I know you will figure out the potty training but don't expect too much until about six months because he is just a baby and their bodies juts aren't designed to "hold it" until they get older. Good luck and we'd love to see pictures. |
