| Need a little advice here, please! I am about to add another furbaby to our family, she is an ADORABLE little Yorkie that is 13-14 weeks old and weighs 2 lbs. I just found out she has Coccidea, but is on medication from the vet. I had never heard of Coccidea, so I researched it on the web. It sounds as though it is not something to be concerned about once the animal is on medication. An exception to this can be when older or very small dogs have Coccidea. I think 2 lbs would qualify as very small dog at 14 weeks, but maybe not. My other Yorkie is 6 and a half lbs at 10 months. When she was 14 weeks she weighed a little over 3 lbs, and has always been quite hearty and healthy. I also learned that full grown animals rarely get it from the puppy but other puppies can. I have a 10 month old Yorkie that has already gone through her first heat--would she be in danger of also getting Coccidea? I also have another dog and 2 cats that are between 4-5 yrs old; would they get it also? I was debating how to pick up the new baby, since the drive is quite lengthy(approx 12.5 hours each way, so an overnight stay would be required) Due to this, I was considering having the baby flown. But then, I had pretty much settled on driving, if we could reach a date that would fit into my and the breeders schedule. It doesn't seem as though that will happen any time soon, so again I was considering having the baby shipped. Now I read that Coccidea can be aggravated by stress, so I am scared to have the little one fly. PLEASE anyone, give me some advice, insight or experience. I am at a loss. Thanks! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali had it when I got her from the Breeder who was treating when I brought her home. The vet just gave me some meds and after a few weeks it was gone. My older dog never got it either. I would think that your 10 month old should be fine. As far as traveling, I'm not sure how long a flight it is but time wise it may be shorter to fly her. 12.5 hpur car trip is pretty long too. Hopefully someone who has experience with flying puppies will reply. Cali was 1 lb and 9 weeks old. Congratulations

| It is true that coccidia can be aggravated by stress...It's not as easy to get rid of sometimes...It took a few rounds of albon for my yorkie's coccidia to go away when we first got him. The coccidia was causing him to be extra hypoglycemic as the parasites were depriving him of all the nutrients he was eating. We had to actually force feed our yorkie with a syringe when he was a pup because he refused food all together and had very bad hypoglycemia. Whether you decide to go with the car ride or the plane ride, your baby will probably get stressed out anyway because she will be leaving her mama and the littler mates and all that. The best thing is to just make sure to have the fecal test done as soon as she finishes her meds to make sure that it's gone. She'll be okay, you just have to make sure to keep an eye on her. Make sure she's eating several small meals throughout the day and access to water at all times. Good luck!

| Personally I would not bring a sick puppy home. I would wait until it was cleared up. |

| so puppies get it from their parents? I mean if they're not out and around other dogs it must have to come from their own mother. sure glad I drop off those stool samples twice a year!

| All dogs are born carriers but most don't ever get it . It can be caused by puppies eating feces from one of their parents or , and this is important, the stress of traveling to a brand new home and having to leave family, siblings and etc behind. A puppy that is having a hard time adjusting to it's new home is more likely to come down with it. |

| thank you....I didn't know stress was such a big factor. One last quick question....if adult dogs have at least one fecal test done a year aren't the chances good that it would be detected?

| Not really, the test would have to be done when the disease is active and often times it doesn't even show up then. |
