| Parvo/ babies' health question Okay so we have new babies. Now I'm going to be worried sick forever. Do you let your girls go out side to do their buisness or do you make them stay inside until the puppies have had their first set of shots. I wasn't 100% sure if the puppies could contract parvo if the mom carries in the germs when she comes in.

| The Mom has open access to my backyard which I know is disease free. As far as other places go, I presume if we can bring home parvo on our shoes, they could too. Also the pups are most likely protected from the Mom's immunity through nursing for at least 5 weeks. Last edited by Lacy's Mom; 09-26-2006 at 01:53 PM. |

| This one lady I talked to (and this is one of those people you never know quite what to beleave) said that if another dog would happen to come up to the fence and my dog sniffed it through the fence then my dog could pick up Parvo from the other dog (if it was carrying it) and give it to the puppies. So now I'm all freaked out. You think they should be good for the first five weeks?

| I have one foot thick rock walls as my fence and very seldom see a dog loose in my neighborhood. One of my neighbors is at least 10 feet above me on one side and the other neighbor is at least 10 feet below me since I live on a hill. Yes, I believe they would have immunity from parvo, but not parasites like fleas, worms, giardia, coccidia, etc. I believe in being cautious, but not paranoid. You can't exactly put them in a bubble and have all your clothes and body and the Mom's body disinfected every time you come in contact with the puppies. On the other hand, I wouldn't be taking the Mom on walks where other dogs urinate and defecate or to Petsmart, etc. Or allowing everyone to pick them up and play with them. |

| I think Lacy's mom gave you good advice. I personally don't let my moms outside until 6 weeks after the pups are born... (they do their business on the pee-pads)... but that is just me... I may be a little "over protective". (I am the house you have take your shoes off when you visit! )

| I just woke to the front page of our newspaper "Parvovirus explodes in city's dog population" so now I will be paranoid right along with you! We just had what they are calling a 100 year flood and I guess this has spread the disease everywhere with the help of the waters and flies. The article says even flies can expose your dog. I guess the vets usually see about 10 cases a year and now they are seeing that in a month. The humane society and animal control have ceased all adoptions. I can give my own vaccines, but prefer to take them to the vet for a good checkup at least for the first in the series, but now I am paranoid about even taking them in a vet's office! I will definitely start exercising strict rules about shoes worn out must be taken off before entering the house and be very vigilant about killing any flies I see. My puppies are due their first vaccine so I am going to give it myself and not risk taking them into a vet's office. On a positive note, I just found out that my vet is the President of the El Paso Veterinary Medical Association - didn't know this, just knew he was knowledgeable and a good vet. | Ummm, geeze, I let my girl go outside to pee. I never even considered Parvo. She would burst if I had to wait for her to pee in the house . I couldn't even try to convince her to do so. However, I have other Yorkies too that go out to pee, so if they got it outside Tiah would end up with it anyway. That better NEVER happen, I'd surely die . |

| If your other ones go out and come in and walk in the same places that Tiah walk it doesn't matter any way, bc if it is there they can track it into the house just a easily as she does. Then if she walks where they have walked in the house she can then track it to the pups. I think it can work that way. Some one correct me if I'm wrong. Odds are it won't but it could.

| That's what I meant....it wouldn't do any good to try and convince her to soil in the house...if one gets it there is a good chance they all would get it....they run all over the same places in here. A truly terrifying thought . That's what I meant by "I'd surely die". |

Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | Here is a link to a site for faq's about parvo i hope it helps! My vet told me not to let Peeka down anywhere untill the 2nd set of shots and don't ever put your baby on the floor of petsmart, petco or any store like this also yes it can be carried on your shoes and if a dog goes to the bathroom in your yard they can get it.
