| Update Lilys temperature is still up but she is on antibiotics so hopefully they will make her feel better. Besides the temperature everything else is fine. I am just not sure if the puppy is eating well. How can I check? Its always close to its momma but I do not see if its nursing. It is so tiny and hidden under Lilys curly hair so it is very hard to see. All I know it is crying from time to time and staying as close to mom as possible. Can you tell me from your experience? |

| First, sweetie, I know how hard it has been for you and the mom. My prayers are with you and yours. As for the puppy, You MUST put open her little mouth, squeeze milk out and clamp her little mouth around the nipple. She has no competetion so getting her enough milk will be easy. You have to do this every hour..weigh the baby on a scale that weighs tenths of ounces. Vickie MUST gain weight immediately so you might have to supple, mental feed. Weigh her a.m. and p.m. and chart it. I ALWAYS give my babies a dose of BeneBac or acidophilus when my moms have had antibiotics. It is the good bacteria that their digestive system uses to digest food and the antibiotics go thru the milk and kills that good bacteria. Your mom can only take Amoxycillen to be safe with the baby. Please go to your PM's for add. info from Rini. |

| Have you seen it latch on and actually suck??? That puppy has to eat every two hours or you will lose him...Its vital you watch him eat, if he isnt you will need to bottle feed. You need to take moms hair and pull it up to her saddle with latex bands... clear the teat area, so the puppy doesnt strangle in the hair. Clearing this area will also help the puppy easily find the teat!

| Nursing I will try to do my best. I know the puppy has to eat, but I am not prepared to take its weight, I dont even have the scale. Mommy has a lot of milk it is just very hard to tell if the baby is eating enough. I know there is no rule because every baby is different but I would like to know for how long it should eat 3-5 min or longer? |

| Can you tell if the pup is nursing at all? If you know for sure it is nursing then when it is done it will sleep..if it's not getting milk the pup will cry alot. Also you need to make sure she is making the pup pee and poo..what I always do is I hold the pups bottom end up to the mom a couple times a day just to make sure. You can also make her lay on her side and sit there and watch to make sure the pup is latched on and eating. If she's trying to curl up too tightly around him that it could prevent him from nursing..

| Update Its Monday afternoon...I had a long weekend with lots of stress. Lilys temperature got back to normal yesterday. She got more active if not too active I would say. She walks around the house , wants to go out few times during the night. Everytime I hear the puppy crying I go check on it. I am still not sure if its eating enough. When you say every 2 hours is it day and night.? Ive tried to feed every 2 hours or so but my baby often doesnt want to eat, just sleep. However, its belly looks nice and full and I make sure mom helps to pee and poh. My other concern is Lilys appetite. She doesnt want to eat dry food. Should I substitute with other stuff? She loves everything else rice, beef, chicken, cottage cheese. Another question is can she drink Esbilac for pups? I got some for the baby because I was afraid it doesnt want mommas milk after she started the antibiotics. Can I mix it with water and give her some? I also have a question about the Bene-Bac. What is the dose for the puppy and if it should be repeated. I gave the puppy couple drops twice. |

If the pup looks full, isn't dehydrated and pees and poos it's getting enough. If he isn't wanting what you are supplementing every two hours I'd say its getting enough from mama..so you might want to try ever 3 or even 4 hours day and night. If you are weighing the pup and he is gaining weight he is getting enough. I woudln't give the mom any Esbilac instead I would give her cottage cheese along with the beef rice and everything else you've been feeding her. I think I answered all of your questions..good luck. The antibiotics won't hurt the babies so you are safe there.
